RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />6848-93 <br /> <br /> BY: Gallagher, <br />George, Gibbons, Roth, Seelie, <br />Smith <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION designating and proclaiming the month of <br />July, 1993 as RAPE AWARENESS MONTH in the City of Lakewood. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, rape and sexual violence affect men and women <br />of all ages, races, nationalities, and incomes, not only as <br />victims and survivors, but as families and communities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the number of reported rapes has increased for <br />the past three decades, doubling in the 1960's and again in the <br />1970's, and increasing by almost 24% in the 1980's, with an <br />increase of 5.5% in 1990 alone; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is estimated that one in every three <br />females and one in five males will be sexually assaulted in some <br />way before they reach 18 years of age; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, unfortunately, the public is exposed to many <br />myths, instead of facts, concerning these problems; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, more rapes are reported in July than in any <br />other month of the year; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor for and by <br />the citizens of the City of Lakewood, hereby designate the month <br />of July, 1993, as Rape Awareness month and urge all citizens to <br />join with the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center in working to raise <br />awareness and increase discussion concerning rape and sexual <br />abuse issues. <br /> <br /> Section 2.
