RESOLUTION NO. 6857-93 BY: Boscia, Gallagher, George, Gibbons, Roth, Seelie, Smith A RESOLUTION to formally recognize August 26, 1993 as Women's Equality Day in the City of Lakewood. WHEREAS, August 26, 1993 will mark the 73d anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to our U.S. Constitution, finally establishing the federal right of women to vote and thus to participate equally with men in our American form of democracy; and WHEREAS, August 26, 1993 has been recognized by Governor George V. Voinovich as Women's Equality Day in the State of Ohio; and WHEREAS, the women of Lakewood achieved municipal suffrage in 1917, due in large part to the efforts of Mrs. Bernice Pyke; and WHEREAS, Bernice Pyke, who was not ,only the first woman delegate to a national political convention, the first to run for Mayor of Lakewood, the first to hold a cabinet position in the City of Cleveland and Ohio's first National Committeewoman, but also co-founder of the local PTA and Lakewood Public Library, carved out a distinguished place for herself and for all women in what had previously been the male face of local politics; and WHEREAS, this Council and this Mayor recognize the tremendous strides toward female empowerment which have been made over these past 73 years and desires to show its support for consistent progression in this area, that the City of Lakewood should continue to be known as a community which holds all its citizens in equal respect and high reynard; BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF~ OHIO: Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor hereby recognize August 26, 1993 as Women's Equality Day in the City of Lakewood, and urge all Lakewood citizens to join in this recognition. Section 2.
