RESOLUTION NO. 6857-93 <br /> <br /> BY: Boscia, Gallagher, <br />George, Gibbons, Roth, Seelie, <br />Smith <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION to formally recognize August 26, 1993 as Women's <br />Equality Day in the City of Lakewood. <br /> WHEREAS, August 26, 1993 will mark the 73d anniversary of the <br />ratification of the 19th Amendment to our U.S. Constitution, finally establishing <br />the federal right of women to vote and thus to participate equally with men in <br />our American form of democracy; and <br /> WHEREAS, August 26, 1993 has been recognized by Governor <br />George V. Voinovich as Women's Equality Day in the State of Ohio; and <br /> WHEREAS, the women of Lakewood achieved municipal suffrage in <br />1917, due in large part to the efforts of Mrs. Bernice Pyke; and <br /> WHEREAS, Bernice Pyke, who was not ,only the first woman delegate <br /> to a national political convention, the first to run for Mayor of Lakewood, the <br /> first to hold a cabinet position in the City of Cleveland and Ohio's first National <br /> Committeewoman, but also co-founder of the local PTA and Lakewood Public <br /> Library, carved out a distinguished place for herself and for all women in what <br /> had previously been the male face of local politics; and <br /> WHEREAS, this Council and this Mayor recognize the tremendous <br /> strides toward female empowerment which have been made over these past 73 <br /> years and desires to show its support for consistent progression in this area, <br /> that the City of Lakewood should continue to be known as a community which <br /> holds all its citizens in equal respect and high reynard; <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF~ OHIO: <br /> Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor hereby recognize <br /> August 26, 1993 as Women's Equality Day in the City of Lakewood, and urge all <br /> Lakewood citizens to join in this recognition. <br /> Section 2.
