RESOLUTION NO. 6970-94 BY: Boscia, Flannery, George, Gibbons, Roth, Seelie, Smith A RESOLUTION designating and proclaiming the month of July 1994 as RAPE PREVENTION MONTH in the City of Lakewood. WHEREAS, statistics show that half of all women will be sexually assaulted at least once in their lifetime. One out of three girls, and one out of five boys will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18; and WHEREAS, the incidence of rape and sexual assault are reaching epidemic proportions and can no longer be ignored. In 1992, Cuyahoga County had 1,217 reported rapes, which is only about one-tenth of the actual rapes that occurred. WHEREAS, many people do not know how to protect themselves from potential assaults or during an assault and many do not know what to do if they or someone they know has been assaulted; and WHEREAS, the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center is the only agency in Cuyahoga County that provides comprehensive services for survivors of rape and sexual assault as well as their family and friends; and WHEREAS, the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center's mission states that they are dedicated to providing supportive services to survivors, but also to the ultimate elimination of the crime of rape itself. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor for and by the citizens of the City of Lakewood, hereby designate the month of July 1994 as Rape Prevention Month and urge all citizens to be aware of this issue, to get actively involved and be intol- erant of any kind of abuse. Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, 3101 Euclid Avenue, Suite 604, Cleveland, OH 44115, and that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the meeting.
