RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />7222-97 BY: Boscia, Corrigan, George, <br /> Roth, Seelie, Smith <br /> <br /> A Resolution requesting the current Administration adopt a policy of <br />purchasing, leasing, renting or taking on consignment goods for use and for resale by <br />city-owned enterprises that are produced under decent working conditions and <br />declaring an emergency. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the current Administration should establish a policy of not <br />purchasing, leasing, renting or taking on consignment goods for use for resale at city- <br />owned enterprises which were produced under harsh or "sweatshop" conditions, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is the desire of this council to support the right of citizens <br />around the world to work in a safe and healthy workplac~e at reasonable compensation <br />by not purchasing products made under sweatshop conditions; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the City is prohibited to the extent possibl~ from <br />purchasing, leasing, renting or taking on consignment goods for use or for resale at city- <br />owned enterprises which were produced under harsh sweatshop conditions. The <br />Administration shall attempt to maintain a policy of evaluating suppliers products <br />concerning the working conditions under which the products are manufactured. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Administration should notify the City's suppliers of <br />this policy in writing and to inquire about the working conditions under which their <br />goods are produced. <br /> <br /> Section 3. That this Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency <br />measure for the reasons stated in the preamble hereof and provided it receives the <br />affirmative vote of two-thirds of all members elected to Council, it shall take effect and <br />be in force immediately upon its adoption and approval by the Mayor, otherwise it <br />shall take effect at the earliest period provided by law. <br /> <br /> Section 4. That the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and <br />directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Ed Boyle, City of North <br />Olrnsted, 5200 Dover Center Road, North Olmsted, Ohio, 44070, and that a copy of this <br />Resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br />Adopted: <br /> <br />Approve . ~ ~ :' / <br /> <br /> President <br /> <br />Clerk <br /> <br />/ , ~. ~ ~._~'. ~._ <br /> <br /> <br />
