ResolmlonNo. 7254-97 t35': Boscia, Corrigan, Flannery, <br /> George, Roth, Seelie <br /> <br /> A Resolution calling on CEI re conclude bargaining ;~ith Utility Workers <br />Local 270; to preserve jobs in our comnmnity and ~o tnake a co~mn~rmeat to m~proved <br />maintenance and emergency response. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the contract bet~veen CEI and Utilit3 Workers local 270 <br />expired on Ma5: 1, 1997, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, CE1 has not resolved numerous grievm~ces, arbitra.tions and <br />unthir labor charges filed against it, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, CEI has laid off union members through out-sourcing their <br /> <br />work, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, CEi plans the lay-off of hundreds of workers throughout the <br />system, both now and after the merger with Ohio Edison that will result in more and <br />longer outages and potential safety hazards to the public; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF <br /> <br />OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the Mayor and Council encourage CEI to (a) conclude <br />bargaining with Local 270 in good faith and to resolve the numerous outstanding <br />grievances, arbitrations and unfhir labor practices; (b) increase its staffing levels to insure <br />excellence in maintenance and emergency response; (c) act as a responsible corporate <br />citizen, recognizing its special obligation, not to the shareholder, but to the citizenry, as a <br />public utility meant to provide safe and reliable electrical services; and (d) respect that <br />class of the public, the utility worker, who makes sat~ and reliable ser¥ice possible. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and <br />directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the Utility Workers Local 270, <br />Robert Farling, Chairman, President and CEO, Centerior Energy Corporation, 6200 Oak <br />Tree Blvd., Independence, OH 44131 and the Board of Directors of CEI. <br /> <br /> Section 3. That it is found and determined that all formal actions of this <br />Council concerning and relating to the adoption of this Resolution were adopted in an <br />open meeting of this Council and that all deliberations of this Council and of any of its <br />comnmtees that resulted in such fbrmal action were in meetings open to the public in <br />compliance with all legal requirements. <br /> <br />Adopted: <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> <br />
