RESOLUTIO~O. 7318-98 BY: Corrigan, Flare fy, George, <br /> Roth, Seelie, Skindell, Smith <br /> <br /> A ~LLrrION commending Congressman Dennis I. Kucinich for <br />working to protect the intnrests of the citizens of Lakewood from the adverse effects <br />from the propoSed Conrail purchase by Norfolk Southern and CS-"X railroads. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in June, 1997, CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads filed <br />application with the Surface Transportation Board to acquire control of Conrail and <br />Consolidated Rail Corporation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, as part of the merger application Norfolk Southern proposed <br />tripling the freight train traffic through the City of Lakewood from 13.5 trains per day <br />to 37.8 trains per day; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed increase in raa traffic wou~d haVe caused <br />significant negative impacts to vehicular movement and travel times, including <br />emergency response Services, and would have decreased the quality of life in <br />LakewOOd; mud <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Congressman Dennis J. Kudnich worked tirelessly to protnct <br />the intnrest.~ of the residenta of Lakewood and built a bipartisan coalition to develop <br />altnrnative plans; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, as a result of these efforts by. Congressman Kucinich, an <br />agreement was reached between the City of Lakewood and the railroads which will <br />ensure that ail of Lakewood's grade cros,~ing~ will be protnctnd by gates, prevent the <br />tripling of train traffic through the City of Lakewood and preserve the quality of life in <br />Lakewood; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE 1T RESOL~JED BY THE C1TY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council and Mayor, hereby commend Congressman <br />Dennis I. Kucinich for working to protect ~ intnrests of the citizens of Lakewood from <br />the adverse effects from the proposed Conrail purchase by, Norfolk Southern and CSX <br />railroads. <br /> <br /> Section Z That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized and <br />directed to forward a certified copy of this r~olution to Congressman Dennis I. <br />Kucinich and that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br />Approved: .- '~ <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> <br />
