RESOLUTION NO. 7410- 99 <br /> <br />BY:Corrigan, FitzGerald, George <br /> Roth, Seelie, Skindell, Smithl <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION opposing House Bill 165 regarding the licensing of <br />persons to carry concealed handguns in the State of Ohio. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, several state representatives in Ohio have introduced House <br />Bill 165 to establish a program for licensing persons to carry concealed handguns and <br />authorizing county sheriffs to issue such licenses; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, currently in Ohio, carrying concealed handguns is a crime <br />under most circumstances and; whereas, the proposed legislation will permit persons to <br />obtain licenses to carry concealed handguns in certain locations which will lead to an <br />overall increase of persons carrying concealed weapons and a greater opportunity for <br />persons to use lethal weapons; and <br /> <br /> ,.~ ~_ ~_ wHEREAS the Ohio Association ~of Chiefs of Police formally opposes <br />House Bill .1.E~5 for the reason that such legislation will likely lead to more violent acts <br />against the public and against law enforcement officers in the State, and the Ohio <br />Prosecuting Attorneys, State Highway Patrol, Fraternal Order of Police and Ohio CounCil <br />of Churches are also opposed to House Bill 165; and <br /> <br /> 'WHEREAS, a resident of Lakewood was recently murdered by use of a <br />concealed weapon and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is the finding of this Council that the citizens of Lakewood <br />'and the~6tkse':~officers sewing the City of Lakewood will likely be placed in greater <br />jeopardy of violent crime if the proposed House Bill 165 is enacted; now, therefore, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CtTY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. The Mayor and Council of the City of Lakewood do hereby <br />express their strong opposition to House Bill 165 for the reasons set forth in the <br />preamble to this Resolution. <br /> <br /> Section 2. The Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this~ <br />Resolution immediately upon its passage and approval to State Representative Bryan <br />Flannery, State Senator Daniel Brady, as well as a copy to Governor Robert Taft. <br /> <br />Adopted: <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> <br />
