RESOLLrHON: 7608-01 BY: Corrigan, FitzGerald, George, <br /> Roth, Seelie, Sktndell, Smith. <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION from the Mayor and City Council to recognize the accomplishments of <br />the staff and advisors of The Lakewood Times. <br /> WHEREAS, The Lakewood Times is a two-part media consisting of a monthly <br />newsmagazine and a Web site produced totally by the students of Lakewood High School and is <br />the second oldest continuous student high school publication in northern Ohio. <br /> WHEREAS, The Times journalism program consists of 40 publication students, 50 <br />journalism class students and 20 graphic printing students who produce The Times and its Web <br />site. These students make all decisions of content and operation, from story ideas to desi'gn and <br />presentation without school or faculty prior review or decision-making, and; <br /> WHEREAS, The journalism program is also a key factor of the fact Lakewood High <br /> School is one of 10 Let Freedom Ring First Amendment High Schools acioss the nation this <br /> year, and one of only four repeaters for this award, given by The Freedom Forum, The <br /> Journalism Educational Association, The Quill and Scroll Society, The Columbia Scholastic <br /> Press Association and the National Scholastic Press.Association, and; <br /> WHEREAS, Given the responsibility to be professional, Times students have established <br /> themselves as the core of a nationally recognized program of excellence, and; <br /> WHEREAS, These students are presented with the opporttmity to practice what they are <br /> taught and what this country is based on: Freedom of expression and exploration, now therefore; <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> Section 1. That this Council and Mayor, hereby, extend to The Lakewood Times <br /> students and their advisors our expression of pride in your accomplishments, and our <br /> appreciation for the fine publicity you have brought to our community <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized and directed <br /> to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the students and the advisors of The Lakewood <br /> Times c/o Lakew0od High School, 14100 Franklin Boulevard, Lakewood, Ohio 44107 and that a <br /> copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the meeting. <br /> Section 3. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council <br /> concerning and relating to the passage of this ordinance were adopted in an open meeting of this <br /> Council, and that all such deliberations of this Cotmcil and of any of its committees that resulted <br /> in such formal action were in meetings open_~to the publ!e in compliance with all legal <br /> requirements.
