RESOLUTIONNO. 7636-02 BY: Corrigan, Dunn, FitzGerald, <br /> George, Roth, Seelie, Skindell. <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION to declare' March "Harvest for Hunger Month" in LakewoocL <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Harvest for Hunger is a community-wide food and funds drive that <br />takes place each March to feed the hungry in 19 Northeast Ohio counties, purchasing <br />food for distribution at nearly 540 neighborhood hunger centers; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Harvest for Hunger campaign, managed by the Greater <br />Cleveland Committee on Hunger, is the second largest food drive of its type in the <br />nation, raising more than $23 million worth of food in the last ten years; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Harvest for Hunger 2001 was a great success having raised <br />4,700,287 pounds of food for our area's most needy citizens, which include children, <br />working adults and seniors; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, hunger is devastating, especially for children, as it affects the way <br />they learn, grow and get along with others; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, each year, Harvest for Hunger media sponsors and local <br />supermarket chains team up to motivate the general public to become involved in the <br />campaign, asking shoppers to make food donations in store drop-off bins or to make a <br />cash contribution through a cashier-led program called "Check Out Hunger"; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, participating supermarkets in Lakewood include Giant Eagle and <br />Tops; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, donors are also encouraged to send cash for food purchase directly <br />to the campaign to achieve bulk-buying discounts and maximize purchasing power, or to <br />organi?e a food and funds drive in your workplace or school; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, contributions can be mailed to Harvest for Hunger, P.O. Box <br />318005, Independence, OH 44131-8005; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council, for itself and on hehalf of all the citizens of this <br />community, declare March "Harvest for Hunger Month" in Lakewood, thereby <br />encouraging residents and civic leaders and institutions to be mindful of the neediest <br />among us and contribute to the success of this campaign. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and directed <br />to forward a certified copy of this resolution to Harvest for Hunger, 1331 Euclid Avenue, <br />Cleveland, OH 44115, and that a copy ofthis resolution be spread upon the minutes of <br /> <br />Adopted: <br /> <br />President <br />M'~yor / <br /> <br /> <br />
