<br />Air Act.

<br /> WHEREAS, pollution from power plants cuts short an est'.unated 1,900 ,lives ~, ,Ohio

<br />the elderly and people with existing lung and heart msease; arm

<br />emitting smog and acid r..a~-formin, l~ mtrog, en crudes., soot and~ a,cm r?m-mrmmg sutm? ammoe,
<br />carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change, and tome metro such as mercury; aha

<br /> WHEREAS, power plant emissions of the global, w_armi~ gas caiman ,dioxi.de pose
<br />threats to human health and our ecosystems, yet are currently l~ee of state or ieaerai regulatmns;
<br />
<br /> WI-IEREAS, Ohio e0al fired po.wet plants were planned or.built b?fore 197.7 and are.
<br />currently exempt from meeting the pollution standards of the Clean Air Act that new plants must
<br />meet; and
<br />
<br /> WItEREAS, The U.S> EPA bas found that in the two decades since the Clean Air Act
<br />was passed, Americans received approximately $20 of?alue _'.m reduced, risks of death, illness
<br />and other adverse effects for every dollar spent to control air pollution; ana
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, pollution from coal fired power plants .could be reduced by installing
<br />modem pollution controls or burning cleaner fuels such as natural gas: and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, there is a threat to the health and safety of our residents and residents of
<br />surrounding areas due to emissions from coal fired plants; now therefore,
<br />
<br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO:
<br />
<br /> Section 1. That the City ofLakewood urg.~s Governor Taft, the Ohio General As,scrub!y,

<br />emissions of the global warming gas, carbon dioxide.
