RESOLUTION NO: 7682-02 BY: Corrigan, Durra, FitzGerald, <br /> George, Roth, Seelie, Skindell. <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION to recognize the Lakewood Historical Society's 50m <br />Anniversary and to designate August 17, 2002 as Lakewood Historical Society Day. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood Historical Society was established in 1952 by a <br />group of dedicated citizens, under the direction of Margaret Manor Butler, in order to <br />create a museum for the preservation of Lakewood's heritage and to preserve the Oldest <br />Stone House; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood Historical Society's mission is to promote the study <br />of regional cultural heritage, especially the history of Lakewood and Rockport Township. <br />This encompasses discovering, collecting, preserving and expanding knowledge of the <br />life, history and traditions of our community; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood Historical Society operates the Oldest Stone House <br />Museum, an 1838 dwelling built by early Lakewood settler John Honam. A portal to <br />Lakewood's past, the museum accurately interprets the everyday lives of Lakewood's <br />people. The Oldest Stone House is. listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood Historical Society saved from demolition and <br />restored the Nicholson House, Lakewood's oldest frame house. Built in 1835 by James <br />and Betsey Nicholson, the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Society's accomplishments over the last fifty years include the <br />formation of the Stone House Society to provide docents for the museum, the additions of <br />a stable foundation and office space in 1975, the establishment cfa Quilt Group in 1975 <br />to promote an interest in quilting, the purchase of the Nicholson House, the oldest <br />surviving structure in the city; the organization of the Women's Board in 1986 to provide <br />fundraising support, and the creation of the Herb Society to stimulate an interest in herbs <br />and provide maintenance of the herb garden;and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood Historical Society provides a wide variety of services <br />to the community, including tours of the Oldest Stone House Museum, maintaining a <br />photo-file collection of over 8,000 images of Lakewood's history, sponsoring the Ohio <br />Heritage summer program for children, special displays and traveling trunks for use in <br />classrooms, information to residents of Lakewood including house histories and historical <br />information on settlers, buildings, streets, etc., and maintaining an archive of Lakewood <br />history; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood Historical Society celebrates fifty years of preserving <br />Lakewood's heritage and educating the public in 2002; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council, for itself and on behalf of all the citizens of this <br />community, recognizes the 50ta Anniversary of the Lakewood Historical Society and <br />designates August 17, 2002 as Lakewood Historical Society day, thereby encouraging <br />residents and civic leaders and institutions to acknowledge and further explore the <br />significance of our cormnunity's history. <br /> <br /> <br />
