RESOLUTION NO: 7683-02 BY: Corrigan, Dunn, FitzGerald, <br /> George, Roth, Seelie, Skindell. <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION to recognize and support the efforts of the Lakewood Citizens <br />Committee to Celebrate Ohio's Bicentennial <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, 2003 is Ohio's Bicentennial and communities throughout our state are <br />making plans to celebrate Ohio's 200~ Birthday. And Lakewood is no exception; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, over the past few months, a group of Lakewood citizens has formed a <br />committee to recognize and celebrate Lakewood's history and culture as a means to emphasize <br />our community's numerous and invaluable contributions to Ohio history; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood Citizens Committee to Celebrate Ohio's Bicentennial will <br />trace our community's history along the path of Ohio statehood for the last 200 years, with an <br />emphasis on the development of Lakewood neighborhoods, churches and schools, our ethnic and <br />cultural history, our distinct architectural heritage, Lakewood women in history, the contributions <br />of veterans, as well as the accomplishments of Lakewood residents in politics, business, literature <br />and the visual and performing arts; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this effort will promote an enhanced understanding and appreciation of our <br />rich history and culture as a community and as Ohioans: It will also provide an opportunity <br />plan for the future; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Citizens Committee has attracted a broad and accomplished group of <br />residents to include writers, historians, representatives from Lakewood Public Library, Lakewood <br />City Schools, the Lakewood Historical Society, The Beck Center for the Arts, the Lakewood <br />Heritage Advisory Board, veterans' organizations and various civic and non-profit organizations; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, city government will be an important parmer for this civic enterprise, as its <br />support and involvement would contribute to the overall success of the bicentennial celebration. <br />So the Citizens Committee, at the earliest practical time, will submit its recommendations to city <br />council for review as a necessary part of planning for 2003; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Lakewood has played a significant role in the progression of Ohio history <br />and the Citizens Committee's efforts will ensure that many more Lakewood residents will <br />appreciate our rich historical and cultural inheritance, thereby building a stronger community for <br />our future; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section I. That this Council, for itself and on behalf of all the citizens of this <br />community, recognizes and supports tho efforts of the Lakewood Citizens Committee to Celebrate <br />Ohio's Bicentennial, thereby encouraging residents and civic leaders and institutions to <br />acknowledge and further explore the significance of our community's history. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and directed to <br />forward a certified copy of this resolution to Lakewood Public Library, Lakewood City Schools, <br />the Lakewood Historical Society, The Beck Center for the Arts, the Lakewood Heritage Advisory <br />Board, and all participating veterans' organizations, civic and non-profit organizations and <br />neighborhood groups, and that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of this <br /> <br />Adopted: <br /> <br />Approved: <br /> <br />P~ent , / <br /> <br /> <br />
