Mazzareila, one of <br />Lakewood's leading citizens who died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at age 78. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Joseph A. Mazzarella, a two-time candidate for Lakewo°d City <br />Council, served as an elected precinct committeeman for the Cuyahoga County <br />Democratic Party and through volunteerism and political participation improved our <br />community through selfless and genuine service to others; and <br /> WHEREAS, Joseph A. Mazzarella, an Army combat medic in World War II,. · <br />served as a member of the £akewood Citizens Committee to Celebrate Ohio's <br />Bicentennial and was a perennial organizer and leader of ceremonies for the Veterans <br />Day Observance at Lakewood Park; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Joseph Mazzarel~ a dedicated public servant for 39-years as a <br />Cleveland patrolman and an outspoken supporter o£the rights of policemen, was elected' <br />Ohio president of the Fraternal Order of Police were he campaigned for higher pay, better <br />benefits and safer conditions for policemen throughout the state; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Joseph A. Mazzarella was awarded nine commendations during his <br />career with the Cleveland Police Department, and as an assistant scoutmaster at Cove <br />United Methodist Church in Lakewood he was given the prestigious Silver Beaver <br />Award, and through an unwav, erhig patriotism and commitment to duty, he performed <br />flag display duties for hundreds of schools and civic clubs that emmed the recognition of <br />the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, Pa., which honored him with two gold medals <br />in the 1970s; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Joseph A. Ma~,,rella co-founded the Cleveland Police Athletic <br />League and volunteered at Juvenile Court, served as a trustee of the Police Credit Union <br />and a member of the Italian American Police Officers Association, VFW and American <br />Legion, now, therefore: <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOI), STATE OF O!~IO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council, for itself and on behalf of all the citizens of this <br />community, honors the memory of Joseph A. Mazzarella, one of Lakewood's leading <br />citizens who died Tuesday, November 1.9, 2002 at age 78. <br /> <br /> Section 2.
