<br />RESOLUTION NO· 7940-04 BY· Corrigan, ifëtm:,-cY" I1è.'I)Ie~, Dunn, <br />FitzGerald, Madigan, Seelie. <br />A RESOLUTION declaring December 1, 2004 World Aids Day in the City of Lake wood. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, World AIDS D¡¡y is observed every year on December 1 to raise <br />awareness and encourage action in the face of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there are now 40,000,000 cases of HIV infection around the world, <br />nearly 1,000,000 in the United States, and over 4,000 in northeast Ohio, making <br />AIDS one of the worst epidemics in human history <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there are 800-1,000 people living with HIVlAIDS in the City of <br />Lakewood, and thousands more who are personally affected as friends or family <br />members. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the theme for Worid AIDS Day 2004 is "Women and AIDS," <br />emphasizing the growing impact of the epidemic on women and families <br /> <br />WHEREAS, AIDS continues to disproportionately affect the poor, racial and <br />sexual minorities, youth, and other populations and communities <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the fight against HIV/AIDS globally, nationally, and in our local <br />communities requires a commitment to education, treatment, and advocacy at all <br />levels of community life, from government to individual citizen action <br /> <br />Now, therefore be it resolved that the City of Lakewood hereby declares <br />December 1, 2004 World AIDS Day in the City of Lakewood, and reaffirms its <br />commitment to support needed prevention education, treatment, and services <br />that will help stem the tide of AIDS in Lakewood, and throughout northeast Ohio. <br /> <br />SECTION 1. This Council hereby determines to support the declaration of <br />December 1, 2004 World AIDS Day in the City of Lake wood, OR. <br /> <br />SECTION 2.
