Resohition No 8041-05 FitzGerald, Madigan~ Seetie, A RESOLUTION endorsing the principles of Greater Ohio, a citizens' network ~vhich promotes, through research, public education, and grassroots advocacy, public policy to improve our economy and quality of life through intelligent land use; and declaring an emergency. WHEREAS, Greater Ohio is a citizens network which promotes, through research, public education and grassroots advocacy, public policy to improve our economy and quality of life through intelligent land use; and WHEREAS, the goals of Greater Ohio and its supporters include the promotion of redevelopment of existing communities, the strengthening of regional cooperation, and the protection of the countryside and Ohio's other natural resources; and that: WHEREAS, the specific principles of Greater Ohio include: · Ensuring that new development benefits all communities in a region The provision of attractive neighborhoods where people can afford to live throughout all regions in Ohio Seeking alternatives to funding schools throu~a local property iaxes Creation of safe streets for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists · The promotion of convenient public transportation Reduction of the isolation of the elderly, minorities and lhe poor · Revitalization of ex/sting cities and towns Conservation of productive fm~n land and natural areas · Preservation of historic buildings and neighborhoods · Provision of green space for le~anre, recreation and thspirafion · Encouragement of regional cooperation for intelligent land use Modernization of Ohio's planning laws for the 21~t century · The support of economic policies which promote econmnic growth in existing communities · Prioritizing the rebuilding and repair of existing roads before construction of new roads · Building a transportation system which provides air, rail and water alternatives to highways to transport persons and goods · Involvement of citizens in planning for the future of their communities and regions; and WHEREAS, the principles and policies promoted by Greater Ohio are necessary to ensure the survival and prosperity of Ohio's central cities, older small towns, inner-ring suburbs and rural farm communities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Administration of the City of Lakewood, State of Ohio, SECTION h This Council hereby indicates its support and endorsement of the principles of Greater Ohio, as set for~ in this Resolution, and urges the residents of Lakewood and other communities thi'oughout the State to educate themselves with regard to these issues and to support policies which promote the revitalization of ex/sting communities~ the preservation of farmland and other natural resources, and intelligent growth SECTION 2: It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council conoemhig and relating to this Resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, and that all deliberations of this Council and of any of its comnhttees that resulted in such formal actions were hi meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements, including Section 121,22 of the Ohio Revised Code SECTION 3: 'Phis Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure immediately necessm'y for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety of the inhabitants of the City of Lakewood, such emergency being the need to join with other communities and parties on a timely basis to support this issue Wherefore, provided it receives the necessary affirmative vote of the elected members, it shall take effect and be hi force immediately upon its adoption and approval by the Mayor; otherWise, it shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law, Approved:
