RESOLUTION NO: 8334-09 BY: Antonio, Bullock, <br />Butler, Dever, Madigan,-'pP'fs~ Summers. <br />A RESOLUTION to become the first city in Ohio to participate in Earth Hour 2009. <br />WHEREAS, what began as a campaign in 2007 to get residents of Sydney, Australia to turn their lights off, <br />Earth Hour has grown to become one of the world's biggest climate change initiatives with citizens, businesses <br />and public authorities in 375 cities across 74 countries committed to turning off their lights for one hour at 8:30 <br />pm on Saturday, March 28th; and <br />WHEREAS, Earth Hour 2009 is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community <br />to stand up, to take responsibility and to get involved in working towards a sustainable future; and <br />WHEREAS, the campaign hopes to reach one billion people in 1,000 cities azound the world with some of the <br />most recognizable landmarks on the planet including Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Table Mountain in <br />Cape Town, Sydney Opera House, CN Tower in Toronto, Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the world's tallest <br />building in Taipei, extinguishing their lights in support of decisive action on global warming; and <br />WHEREAS, Earth Hour sends a message to world leaders who will be taking a serious look at climate <br />legislation and international agreements set to be negotiated in the Conference on Climate Change 2009 in <br />Copenhagen. <br />WHEREAS, participation by Lakewood in Earth Hour 2009 would make our community the first municipality <br />in Ohio to do so. NOW THEREFORE, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council declares its support and encourages participation in Earth Hour 2009 on March 28, <br />2008 at 8:30 pm. <br />Section 2. That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br />Section 3. It is hereby found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning <br />and relating to the passage of this Resolution were passed in open meetings of this Council, and that all such <br />deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees that resulted in any such formal action, were in <br />meetings open to the public, in compliance with all legal requirements including the City's Charter and Codified <br />Ordinances. <br />Adopted: ~ I °dq <br />Approved: f ~~ <br />DENT <br />
