RESOLUTION NO. 8`_.88-10 BY: Antonio, Bullock, Butler, Madigan, <br />Powers, Smith, Summers. <br />A RESOLUTION Recognizing: ButtOut Ohio Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Day January <br />13, 2010. <br />WHEREAS: Today in the United States, approximately 43.4 million adults and 4.5 million <br />adolescents smoke; and <br />WHEREAS: Despite known health risks, nearly 6,000 youth under the age of 18 start smoking <br />each day, with 2,000 actually becoming regular smokers; and - <br />WHEREAS: The. lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population has a higher <br />smoking rate than any other minority population. Some reseazch estimates that members of the <br />LGBT community, smoke cigarettes at rates ranging from 40 to 60 percent higher than the <br />heterosexual population; and <br />WHEREAS: The percentage of LGBT youth using tobacco is growing at an alarming rate. The <br />Ohio Department of Health is one of the nation's first state health programs to seek to actively <br />address the disconcerting proportion of LGBT youth who use tobacco products; <br />WHEREAS: The City of Lakewood joins other Ohio communities in designafing January 13, <br />2010 to encourage LGBT youth and allies to live atobacco-free life. This day marks the launch <br />of "ButtOut Ohio" in Cleveland, a program designed to reach LGBT youth with tobacco <br />prevention and cessation messages through outreach activities and events; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1. That the City of Lakewood does hereby recognize January 13, 2010, as: ButtOut <br />Ohio Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Day. <br />Section 2. That the Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to forwazd a copy this <br />Resolution to the Ohio Department of Health and that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon <br />the minutes of this meeting. <br />Section 3. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning and <br />relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, and <br />that all such deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees that resulted in such <br />formal action were in meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements. <br />Adopted: `~~ ~U/ <br />Approved: ~ ~6 f ~.~ ~fl <br />
