RESOLUTION NO. 8402-10 By; Antonio, Bullock, Butler, Madigan,
<br />Powers, Smith, Summers.
<br />A RESOLUTION commending eleven members of the Lakewood High School "Human Rights and
<br />Conflict" class for having been selected to represent Lakewood at a workshop at the White House for their
<br />leadership in promoting an appreciation of different ideas, cultures and backgrounds of the various and diverse
<br />people in our Lakewood community.
<br />WHEREAS, working with the nonprofit group Facing History & Ourselves, eleven Lakewood High School
<br />students were chosen to participate in activities and events exploring the impact of music from the Civil Rights
<br />Movement, and
<br />WHEREAS, Lakewood High School Students Kladijah Baker, Seth Baker, Kristian Hila, Celia Lamb,
<br />Adrienne Mahone, Annalisa Perez, Sarah Speice, Chelsea Stenger, McKenzie Stenger, Jamil Thomas, CaNada
<br />Tate-Griffin, were part of a select group to attend workshops and on February 9th, to see a live concert "In
<br />Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement" hosted by President
<br />Barack Obama and Michele Obama which showcased such artists as Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, John Legend, John
<br />Mellencamp and Smokey Robinson, and
<br />WHEREAS, the events coincided with Black History Month and featured a workshop led by Motown's
<br />magnificent Smokey Robinson and former Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Director and Grammy Museum Executive
<br />Director Bob Santelli, and
<br />WHEREAS, Facing History, an organization that provides curriculum for educators to teach students about
<br />tolerance and moral choices, was asked by the Grammy Museum to invite up to twelve high schools for their
<br />students to attend the workshop, and
<br />WHEREAS, Lakewood High School Social Studies teachers Joe Lobozzo and Alisa Nazelli, developed a
<br />close working relationship with Facing History through the courses they've taught such as the "Human Rights and
<br />Conflict" class and were the first to be contacted for the selection, and
<br />WHEREAS, these eleven young people, who represent the best that Lakewood has to offer, with the
<br />principles of unity, equality and tolerance that they embrace, also offer our best hope for our nation's future that we
<br />shall, indeed, overcome; now, therefore,
<br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO
<br />Section 1. That this Council and Mayor commend these eleven Lakewood High School "students and
<br />Advisors Joe Lobozzo and Alica Nazelli for their avid participation in the "Human Rights and Conflict "class, their
<br />genuine enthusiasm in the Race and Diversity Club, and for the leadership they have shown with Facing History's
<br />Cleveland chapter.
<br />Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of
<br />this resolution to our snow-stranded students upon their anxiously awaited return and that a copy of this resolution be
<br />spread upon the minutes of this meeting.
