RESOLUTION NO. 8697 -13 BY: Anderson, Bullock, Juris, Madigan, <br />Nowlin, Powers, Smith. <br />A RESOLUTION commending Brian E. Powers for his public service as a member of Lakewood City <br />Council. <br />WHEREAS, Brian E. Powers became a Councilmember -at -Large in 2008, and served in that <br />capacity until December 31, 2013, choosing not to seek re- election to that office, and <br />WHEREAS, throughout his tenure, Mr. Powers dedicated great energy and focus in equal measure to <br />each of the many roles he assumed on Council which include membership on the Health and Human Services <br />Committee, Public Safety Committee, Rules and Ordinances Committee, the Lakewood Hospital Board, and <br />as Chair of the Finance Cormnittee, and <br />WHEREAS, ivIr. Powers' principle objective at the onset of his tenure was to restore structural <br />balance to the City's finances and one in which he played a vital role in accomplishing with successive <br />balanced budgets in each of his six years on Council, and <br />WHEREAS, his ability to mediate heated discussions to successful resolutions by using a blend of <br />directness, intellect, courage and good humor earned him the esteem of his colleagues who elected him <br />President of Council in 2012, and <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Powers lent his time and talents to the betterment of Lakewood through which <br />Lakewood now has a law ensuring developers upgrade property awaiting projects, a stronger General Fund <br />balance and a viable City asset through the leasing of Winterhurst Ice Rink, a history of advocacy for home <br />rule to combat State overreach and an expanded perspective in Council appointments with his insistence on <br />diversity and increased presence of women serving on Boards and Commissions, and <br />WHEREAS, the public service generously and unselfishly provided by Mr. Powers knows no bounds <br />and it is only fitting and proper we return our boundless gratitude to him by way of this formal resolution; now <br />therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO <br />Section 1. That this Council and Mayor wish to commend Brian E. Powers for his dedicated and <br />devoted service to the City of Lakewood as Councilmember -at -Large and President of Council. <br />Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified <br />copy of this Resolution to Council President Brian E.
