RESOLUTION NO. 8890 -16 BY: Anderson, Bullock, Litten, Marx, Nowlin, O'Leary, O'Malley. A RESOLUTION commending Lakewood High School graduate Makorobondo Salukombo for his ascension to Olympic standing as a Marathon competitor in the 2016 Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro representing the Democratic Republic of the Congo. WHEREAS, Mr. Salukumbo was a 2 Time Athlete of the Year at Lakewood High School, is a Cross - country record holder at 15:28, and WHEREAS, he continued his outstanding athleticism in college as a 6 -time All- American at Denison University, remaining a record holder at Denison in Cross- country, 5K (indoor and outdoor), 3K indoor, 1 mile indoor and DMR, and WHEREAS, Mr. Salukumbo's achievements include helping others achieve reach goals; he is the founder and president of Project Kirotshe ( Kirotshe Foundation) where a member of the Kirotshe team, Beatrice Kamuchanga was selected for the 2016 Congo Olympic Team and 53 student athletes received academic scholarships for the 2015 -2016 academic year, and WHEREAS, he is a 2015 Jovial Concept Community Building Award recipient, and a 2012 Davis Projects for Peace recipient, and WHEREAS, the truest meaning of the Olympic games recognizes the importance of diversity by forging the unique spectacle of uniting a myriad of nations to compete in games of speed, strength, endurance and teamwork that makes them thrilling and profound, and WHEREAS, Makorobondo "Dee" Salukombo, a native of Democratic Republic of the Congo, has brought honor to both his country and ours by sharing with all our citizens his multiple talents of athleticism, his brilliance in the classroom, and his humanity through the Davis Projects for Peace and his award winning efforts with Community Building, and WHEREAS, the United States of America and the City of Lakewood have always taken pride in knowing that our strength and honor are dependent on welcoming many cultures and nations that contribute to our greatness, and WHEREAS, some of the bright rays of light that shine on "Dee" for all his success have also graced our city of Lakewood; now, therefore: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: Section 1. That it be resolved on this day, Lakewood City Council and Mayor Summers thank Mr. Solukombo for his generous contributions and make it known to "Dee" that no matter where he may go, the door to our schools, the path to our parks, the gate to our track and fields, and the key to our city will always be open to him and the entire Salukombo family. Section 2. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, in meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements. r--} Adopted: Approved: Mayor
