RESOLUTION NO. 8992 -18 BY :Anderson, Bullock, George, Litten, <br />O'Leary, O'Malley, Rader. <br />A RESOLUTION proclaiming March 21, 2018, as "DOWN SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY" in Lakewood <br />WHEREAS, there are an estimated 6 million people with Down syndrome in the world today; and <br />WHEREAS, people with Down syndrome deserve fundamental human and civil rights and yet in many countries, <br />people with Down syndrome are not afforded those rights; and <br />WHEREAS, despite dramatic increases in lifespan and intellectual ability in the U.S., there is still much work to be <br />done regarding the rights to equality, inclusion, education, medical care, research and support for people with Down <br />syndrome in the U.S. and abroad; and <br />WHEREAS, starting with Singapore in 2006, and recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011, the <br />date 3 -21 has come to represent 3 copies of chromosome 21 (hence 3 -21) and has developed into a movement to <br />celebrate and value people with Down syndrome around the world; and <br />WHEREAS, in Lakewood, Ohio groups such as the GiGi's Playhouse Achievement Center for People with Down <br />Syndrome, and other agencies support, educate, and connect individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the <br />communities in which we live and promote research to enrich the lives of individuals with Down syndrome; and <br />WHEREAS, GiGi's Playhouse Achievement Center for People with Down Syndrome has in the last three years <br />achieved National Recognition from their National Organization, GiGi's Playhouse for their leadership in <br />developing dozens of free programs for their participants through the exemplary efforts of their Volunteers; and <br />WHEREAS, through public awareness, the City of Lakewood celebrates the hard work and progress made by <br />parents, self - advocates, medical professionals, researchers, educators, and many non - profit organizations all over our <br />Community and World including, but certainly not limited to, the GiGi's Playhouse and the City of Lakewood; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood joins our nation, the United Nations and more than 190 other countries in <br />celebrating and valuing the lives and equality of people with Down syndrome; NOW, THEREFORE, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council and Mayor proclaim March 21, 2018 Down Syndrome Awareness Day in the City of <br />Lakewood. <br />Section 2. That it is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning and related to the <br />passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council and that all such deliberations o and any <br />of its committees that resulted in such formal action were in meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal <br />requirements. <br />Adopted: i"cU c f - ('t , 2Gt l )' <br />Approved: !� Z_ c) Z, D� <br />
