RESOLUTION NO. 9014 -18 BY: Anderson, Bullock, Litten, George, O'Leary, O'Malley, Rader A RESOLUTION to join together with the families of those touched by prostate cancer, health care providers, and public health advocates across the nation to declare September 2018 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Lakewood, Ohio. WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men and the second leading cause of cancer death among American men; and WHEREAS, in Ohio an estimated 5,810 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and an estimated 1,110 fathers, grandfathers, brothers, and sons will die of this disease in 2018; and WHEREAS, African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer should be aware of their increased risk for developing prostate cancer and talk to their doctors about the potential benefits and harms of screening; and WHEREAS, starting at age 55, all men are encouraged to talk with their doctors and to make a decision together about whether prostate cancer screening is right for them. Now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: Section 1. That this Council and Administration does hereby declare the month of September 2018 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Lakewood, Ohio to raise awareness about prostate cancer and to offer support and fellowship to those families in our community touched by this disease. Section 2. That this Council and Administration encourage men and their families to make healthy lifestyle choices in order to reduce the overall risk of cancer and for men, starting at age 55, to talk with their doctors about prostate cancer screening. Section 3. That the Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer proclamation team which has been hard at work gathering proclamations and resolutions to take to Capitol Hill. Section 4. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, and that all such deliberations of this Council and any of its committees that resulted in such formal action, were in meetings open to the public, in compliance with all legal requirements.
