RESOLUTION NO. 9014 -18 BY: Anderson, Bullock, Litten, George, <br />O'Leary, O'Malley, Rader <br />A RESOLUTION to join together with the families of those touched by prostate cancer, <br />health care providers, and public health advocates across the nation to declare September 2018 as <br />Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Lakewood, Ohio. <br />WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men <br />and the second leading cause of cancer death among American men; and <br />WHEREAS, in Ohio an estimated 5,810 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed <br />and an estimated 1,110 fathers, grandfathers, brothers, and sons will die of this disease in 2018; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer <br />should be aware of their increased risk for developing prostate cancer and talk to their doctors <br />about the potential benefits and harms of screening; and <br />WHEREAS, starting at age 55, all men are encouraged to talk with their doctors and to <br />make a decision together about whether prostate cancer screening is right for them. Now, <br />therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council and Administration does hereby declare the month of <br />September 2018 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Lakewood, Ohio to raise awareness <br />about prostate cancer and to offer support and fellowship to those families in our community <br />touched by this disease. <br />Section 2. That this Council and Administration encourage men and their families to <br />make healthy lifestyle choices in order to reduce the overall risk of cancer and for men, starting <br />at age 55, to talk with their doctors about prostate cancer screening. <br />Section 3. That the Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to forward a <br />certified copy of this Resolution to the ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer proclamation team <br />which has been hard at work gathering proclamations and resolutions to take to Capitol Hill. <br />Section 4. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning <br />and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, <br />and that all such deliberations of this Council and any of its committees that resulted in such <br />formal action, were in meetings open to the public, in compliance with all legal requirements. <br />
