RESOLUTION NO. 9015 -18 BY: Anderson, Bullock, George, Litten, <br />O'Leary, O'Malley, Rader <br />A RESOLUTION to join together with mental health advocates, prevention <br />organizations, survivors, allies, and community members to declare September 2018 as Suicide <br />Prevention Month in Lakewood, Ohio. <br />WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the tenth leading <br />cause of death in the U.S. and the second leading cause of death among young people aged 10- <br />34, and; <br />WHEREAS, suicide is also a leading cause of death in Ohio. In 2016, 1,706 Ohioans died <br />by suicide, leaving behind their friends and family to navigate the tragedy of loss, and; <br />WHEREAS, those suffering from suicidal ideation and untreated mental illness can <br />oftentimes be helped when they hear messages of hope, are linked with mental health resources, <br />and feel connected to others and their communities, and; <br />WHEREAS, it is well past time to break through the shame and silence surrounding <br />suicide and suicidal ideation so that friends, families, and communities can have the tools they <br />need to speak openly about this difficult topic which can potentially save a life. Now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council and Administration does hereby declare the month of <br />September 2018 as Suicide Prevention Month in Lakewood, Ohio and encourages residents to <br />consider how their actions towards others can potentially promote healing, help, and hope. <br />Section 2. That this Council and Administration would like to take the opportunity to <br />promote the free and confidential services of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline which can <br />be reached at 1- 800 - 273 -8255, Cuyahoga County 24/7 Crisis Hotline 216- 623 -6888 and the <br />national Crisis Text Line which can be reached by testing "4hope" to 741 741. <br />Section 3. That this Council and Administration recognize and appreciate the mental <br />health service providers, counselors, peer supporters and others who provide compassionate care <br />to families and individuals in our community suffering from suicide ideation or suicide loss. <br />Section 4. That the Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to forward a <br />certified copy of this Resolution to the United City of Yorkville Illinois's National Suicide <br />Prevention Awareness Month Proclamation Project which has inspired over a hundred such <br />resolutions and proclamations to be passed during September 2018. <br />Section 5. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning <br />and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, <br />and that all such deliberations of this Council and any of its committees that resulted in such <br />formal action, were in meetings open to the public, in compliance with all legal requirements. <br />
