<br />MINUTES OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE <br />MARCH 20, 2023 <br />AUDITORIUM <br />Present: Baker (Chair), Shachner, Marx <br />Others: Councilmembers Bullock & Kepple, Mayor George, Chief Kaucheck, Director Vargo, <br />Clerk Bach, Be SMART members Patricia Barley, Stacie Ross & Marianne Crampton, members <br />of the public, and Deputy Clerk Hamideh taking minutes <br />Time: 6:33 p.m. <br />AGENDA <br />Approval of the minutes of the January 17, 2022 meeting of the Public Safety Committee <br />Motion by Chair Baker, seconded by Councilmember Shachner to approve the minutes from the <br />previous meeting. All in favor. Motion passed. <br />Communication from Councilmembers Baker, Kepple, and Marx regarding Safe Gun <br />Storage – Be SMART. (Referred to Public Safety 2/21/23) <br />Chair Baker thanked the members of the Be SMART program for attending the meeting and <br />expressed his interest in learning more about what Lakewood can do for gun safety. <br />Be SMART members Patricia Barley and Stacie Ross introduced themselves and spoke about the <br />creation of Be SMART. They spoke about present day active-shooter drills for students and <br />expressed the trauma caused by gun violence. <br />A video regarding deaths caused by gun violence was presented. Statistics that correlated deaths <br />and gun violence were shared. Speakers in the video gave the audience tips for gun safety and <br />expressed the importance of preventing gun death. <br />Ms. Ross and Ms. Barley identified gun violence as a public health crisis. A survey of Lakewood <br />residents and gun ownership was shared. Methods were given to prevent unsupervised children <br />and teens from accessing guns. <br />The acronym SMART in the Be SMART program was broken down into steps to avoid gun <br />violence. Ms. Ross and Ms. Barley explained how a presentation of Be SMART can be <br />scheduled for any adult group. They also explained how to get involved in the Moms Demand <br />Action organization. <br />Councilmembers Kepple, Marx, Bullock, and Shachner thanked Ms. Ross and Ms. Barley for the <br />presentation and for their volunteer work. <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />
