<br />MINUTES OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE <br />October 16, 2023 <br />AUDITORIUM <br />Present: Councilmembers Baker & Shachner <br />lso present: Councilmembers Kepple & Bullock, Police Captain Eschweiler, Animal Control <br />A <br />Officer Jack Crawford, LASWAB Chair Erin MacDonald, Law Director Vargo <br />Call to Order: 7:08 p.m. <br />Approval of the minutes of the October 2, 2023 meeting of the Public Safety Committee. <br />Chairman Baker deferred approval of the minutes. <br />RESOLUTION 2023-43 – A RESOLUTION to take effect immediately provided it <br />receives the affirmative vote of at least five members of Council, or otherwise to take effect <br />and be in force after the earliest period allowed by law, to increase the adoption fees for <br />animals that are adopted through the Lakewood Animal Shelter. (referred to PS & <br />LASWAB 09/05/23) <br />Chairman Baker noted that Resolution 2023-43 was simultaneously referred to Public Safety <br />Committee and the Animal Safety & Welfare Advisory Board (LASWAB). Captain Eschweiler <br />and Animal Control Officer Jack Crawford were introduced to explain the proposed increases. <br />Officer Crawford explained that the shelter’s current animal adoption fees are as follows: <br />Cat - $50 <br />Dog - $70 <br />He noted that the last increase was 7-8 years ago and increased the previous adoption fee for cats <br />from $35 to the current amount of $50. <br />fficer Crawford presented the current costs for spaying/neutering cats as follows: <br />O <br />Spay - $74.50 <br />Neuter - $69.50 <br />He proposed that the shelter increase rates to cover costs as follows: <br />Cat - $75 <br />Dog - $100 <br />He added that dogs are rarely brought to the shelter. He noted that even with these proposed <br />increases, the adoption fees are below the fees charged by the Animal Protective League or a pet <br />store. Included in the spay/neuter price is a rabies vaccine, a flea/tick synergy shot and a free first <br />vet check-up under certain conditions. <br />1 <br /> <br />
