RESOLUTION N0. 82-55 <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor & Council as a Whole <br />A RESOLUTION URGING THE OHIO GENERAL ASSEMBLY <br />TO ADOPT LEGISLATION CALLING FOR AN IMMEDIATE <br />HALT TO THE NUCLEAR ARMS RACE AND URGING OUR <br />NATIONALLY-ELECTED OFFICIALS TO SUPPQRT AND <br />ENCOURAGE A PERMANENT MOR.ATORIUM ON NUCLEAR <br />WEAPONS. <br />WHEREAS, the United States and other countries are said to <br />possess many nuclear weapons by which many cities in the world <br />could be destroyed, and yet over the next decade said countries <br />plan to build many more nuclear warheads, along with new missiles <br />to deliver them at long and short range; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council believes that a nuclear arms race <br />constitutes a serious threat to national and international security <br />and will ultimately lead to nuclear war and worldwide total <br />destruction and devastation; and <br />WHEREAS, there is legislation pending before the Ohio General <br />Assembly, which is directed to the Congress of the United States <br />and should call for an immediate nuclear weapons freeze by the <br />United States and all other nations and for negotiations with all <br />nations for a permanent moratorium on nuclear weapons; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF MAYFIELD VILLAGE, OHIO, THAT: <br />Section 1. That the Council of Mayfield Village, on behalf <br />of its citizens, expresses its strong support for an immediate <br />mutual nuclear weapons freeze by the United States and all other <br />nations and for the negotiation of a permanent moratorium on <br />nuclear weapons. <br />Section 2. That the Council of Mayfield Village, on behalf <br />of its citizens, strongly urges the Ohio General Assembly to <br />adopt legislation which calls for an immediate nuclear weapons <br />freeze by the United States and all other nations. <br />Section 3. That the Council of Mayfield Village, on behalf <br />of its citizens, strongly urges our nationally-elected officials <br />to support and encourage negotiations with all other nations for <br />a permanent moratorium on nuclear weapons. <br />Section 4. That the Clerk of Council be and the same is <br />hereby instructed to forward certified copies of this Resolution <br />to President Ronald Reagan, U.S. Senators John G1enn and Howard <br />Metzenbaum; U.S. Representatives Dennis Eckart, Ronald Mott1; Mary <br />Oakar, Louis Stokes and to all members of the Cuyahoga County <br />delegation to the State General Assembly. <br />Section 5. That the Council finds and determines that all <br />formal actions of this Council relating to the adoption of this <br />Resolution have been taken at open meetings of this Council; and that
