<br />such space, shall not be installed in floors of
<br />combustible construction unless specifically
<br />approved by the Building Official for such
<br />installation and installed in accordance with
<br />the conditions of such approval.
<br />1591.32 Clearances for furnaces.
<br />(a) To unprotected and protected con-
<br />struction. No warm-air furnace, hot-water
<br />boiler, or steam heating boiler shall be lo-
<br />cated nearer than 24 inches in any direction
<br />to combustible material, or combustible base
<br />of plastered construction, except that this
<br />distance may be reduced to:
<br />i. 12 inches, when such heating appliance
<br />is enclosed in a jacket or casing providing
<br />an air space, or is insulated in a manner ap-
<br />proved by the Building Official, or
<br />ii. 12 inches, where the combustible con-
<br />struction within 24 inches of the heating
<br />appliance is protected with 3/s" gypsum
<br />board under i/s" cement-asbestos board, or
<br />3/4' gypsum or portland cement plaster on
<br />metal or wire lath, or r/z" gypsum plaster on
<br />3/s" gypsum lath, or other material having a
<br />fire-resistance rating of not less than s/4 hour.
<br />iii. 6 inches, when there is compliance with
<br />both paragraphs (i) and (ii) of this sub-
<br />section.
<br />(b) Required for operation. No clearance
<br />distance'shall, in any location, be less than
<br />that required to operate, service, inspect and
<br />maintain properly the heating device and its
<br />accessory equipment. Hand-fired heating ap-
<br />pliances shall have a minimum clearance of
<br />48 inches in_ front of the firing door and the
<br />ash pit door.
<br />1591.33 Clearance for space heaters, stoves,
<br />and ranges.
<br />(a) General. The clearances for space
<br />heaters, stoves or ranges burning the normal
<br />fuel gases shall conform to the. ASA Stand-
<br />ard Installation of -Gas Piping and Gas Ap-
<br />pliances in Buildings, ASA 221.30.
<br />(b) Unprotected and protected combus-
<br />tible construction. No space heater, stove or
<br />range burning liquid or solid fuel shall be
<br />placed within 24 inches of combustible con-
<br />structionnor within 18 inches of combustible
<br />supports or combustible base of plastered
<br />construction. These distances may be re-
<br />duced one-half where such construction is
<br />protected by a shield of galvanized or bright
<br />reflecting metal or other equivalent noncom-
<br />bustible material extending from the floor
<br />to 1 foot above and 1 foot beyond the sides of
<br />such appliances:
<br />(c) Provide access to attached fuel tanks.
<br />Space heaters, stoves, and ranges burning
<br />liquid fuel which have an attached fuel tank
<br />shall be installed with sufficient clearance to
<br />provide direct and easy access to the fuel
<br />tank and shall have ashut-off valve between
<br />the tank and the heater, stove or range.
<br />1591.34 Clearances for ceiling-type direct-
<br />fired unit heaters.
<br />(a) Unprotected and protected combus-
<br />tible construction. Ceiling-type, direct-fired
<br />unit heaters shall in all cases be equipped
<br />with the automatic controls specified in Sec-
<br />tions 159122 to 159129 inclusive and, except
<br />as herein provided, shall have clearances of
<br />not less than 18 inches from combustible
<br />material or combustible base of plastered
<br />construction. When combustible construc-
<br />tion is protected as set forth in subsection
<br />1591,32 (a) ii, the clearance distance may be
<br />reduced to 6 inches or to such lesser dis-
<br />tance as may be approved in subsection (b)
<br />of this Section.
<br />(b) Permissible reduction. Ceiling-type
<br />direct-fired unit heaters which have been
<br />tested by an accredited testing agency and
<br />approved by said agency for installation with
<br />lesser clearances than specified in subsection
<br />(a) of this Section may be installed with
<br />clearances specified in such approval unless
<br />and until otherwise ordered by the Board of
<br />Building Code Appeals.
<br />1591.35 Direct-fired wall heaters.
<br />Direct-fired heaters shall not be installed
<br />in walls of combustible construction unless
<br />approved by the Board of Building Code
<br />Appeals.
<br />1591.36 Clearance for steam or hot water
<br />unit heaters.
<br />Steam or hot water unit heaters shall be
<br />installed to provide clearances of not less
<br />than 1 inch from all heated portions thereof
<br />to combustible material, whether plastered
<br />or unplastered.
<br />1591.37 Controls for existing heating instal-
<br />lations.
<br />Whenever an existing furnace is rein-
<br />stalled, replaced, moved, converted for use
<br />of other fuel from that previously used, or
<br />otherwise materially altered, it shall be
<br />equipped with a temperature limit control
<br />operating as specified for new installations
<br />in Sections 1591.22 to 1591.29 inclusive, ex-
<br />cept that existing temperature limit controls
<br />may be retained without change.
