When ceiling joists do not serve as a tie at'the plate line, ceiling joists or other ties on each pair of rafters shall be provided below the upper third and they shall be spiked to each rafter. (c) Nailing to supports. Wood rafters shall be so spiked or otherwise fastened to the plate or other members as to resist safely all thrusts under full load and the up- ward lift. The minimum fastening shall, be two 16d nails at each rafter end, or the equiv- alent thereof, ' (d) Special • f raining. Framing around roof openings, and hip .and valley rafters, shall be designed for the loads supported. Double rafters and headers shall be used around roof openings unless single members are approved by the Building Official as ode- quote for the load. (e) At ridge boards. At ridges, rafters shall be framed against ridge boards not less than 1 x 8 inches in size. The ridge shall be nailed to the first rafter of the pair with 2 nails, lOd for 1 inch ridgy board or 16d for 2 inch ridge board. The second rafter of the pair shall be nailed through its top edge to the ridge with one lOd nail and toe-nailed to the ridge with one lOd nail. 1575:07 Cantilever construction. In cantilever construction, where the, ex- teriorface of the second floor extends beyond the supporting wall of the first floor, the overhang of the second floor joists shall 'be not more than.l5 inches, unless expressly approved by the'Building Official. 1575.08 Roof sheathing-general. All roofing materials, excepting wood shingles, shall be applied over closed solid sheathing of wood boards, plywood or other approved materials providing secure attach- ment for the roofing and moisture-resistance and fire-resistance at least equal to that of nominal one-inch wood sheathing. Under wood shingles, l inch by 3 inch shingle lath, spaced according to shingle exposure, may be used instead of closed sheathing. 1575.09 ,Wood roof sheathing. Woad roof sheathing shall have a minimum nominal thickness of 1 inch and shall be ap- plied over rafters spaced not more than 24 inches o.c. Joints shall be over rafters, un- less end-matched boards are used. If end- matched boards are used, no two adjoining boards shall break joints: over the same rafter space and each; board shall bear on at least two rafters. 1575.10 Plywood roof sheathing. (a) Minimum thickness. Wood or asbestos-cement shingles, slate or the roofing, applied over plywood roof sheathing less than ~/z inch thick shall be fastened by means of barbed nails or nailed to wood or other approved nailing strips. (c) Minimum grade. Plywood sheathing shall be not less than %`sheathing" grade, "Interior Type;" conforming to the require- ments for such material included.in CS 45. (d) Protection of edges. Plywood roof sheathing when not of the "Exterior Type" shall have no surface or edge exposed to the weather. Outer edges 'of any type of ply- wood along eaves and rake of roof, and edges and faces of plywood within 6 inches of outer edges shall receive two. heavy coats of white lead paint. Outer edges shall be further protected with moldings or metal flashing. 1575,11 subflooring-general. In all 'buildings with wood-framed con- struction, where finished wood floors of wood less than 3/4 inch in actual thickness are in- stalled, subflooring of wood not less than one inch nominal thickness or plywood not less than 5/s inch thick shall be provided under all finished wood floors. ' 1575.12 Wood subflooring. (a) -Size, type and application. Wood board for subflooring skull have a nominal thickness of 1 inch and a:xmaximum width of 8 inches. Subfloor boards shall be ship- lapped, tongue-and-grooved or square edged. End boards shall be cut parallel to and over center of joists. The maximum joist spacing shall be 16 inches o.a when finished flooring is parallel to the joists, and 24 .inches_ o.c• when finished flooring of at least 1 inch nomi- nalthickness is at right angles to joists.,
