Sec. 7 LEAD JOINTS: (a) GEIv%RiiL: Before laying the pipes all lumps, bl~.sters and excess coating n~a.terial shall be removed from both bell and spigot ends vrire brushed, and v~.ped. clean and dry. The sp:~~;ot shall be centered in the bell, the pipe sho~~~ed into position and brought into true alignment secured there with earth tamped around the pipe except at bell hoJ_es. Bells shall face the direction of laying except on appreciable grades they shall face uphill. Sterilized yarnir_g material as above specified handled to avoid contamination, shall be applied dry and firmly pressed into the joint. The yarning material sha7.1 be long enough 'to reach en- tirely around the pipe vrith ends overlapping not less than two inches. The ends shall meet on opposite sides of p~.pe and not on top or bottom. If necessary successive stz~ands of yarning material shall be driven home _g-
