04/14/89 <br />RESOLUTION N0. 89- 27. <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Carmen and Council as a Whole <br />A RESOLUTION <br />RECOGNIZING APRIL, 1989 AS FAIR HOUSING MONTH AND <br />AFFIRMING AND SUPPORTING THE CONSTITUTIONAL <br />RIGHTS OF ALL CITIZENS TO LIVE WHERE THEY CHOOSE <br />WHEREAS, the United States Congress has adopted a national policy o£ <br />promoting, within constitutional limitations, fair housing throughout the <br />country; and <br />WHEREAS, one of our nation's most cherished freedoms is the right of all <br />persons to live where they choose and can afford, without fear of persecution <br />or intimidation because of their race, color, religion, sex, ancestry, handi- <br />cap or national origin; and <br />WHEREAS, the Council further £inds that the general welfare and economic <br />stability of the community benefit from a stable, integrated community, <br />including the benefits of interracial, interreligious, and intercultural <br />associations; and <br />WHEREAS, since the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act in April, <br />1968, the month o£ Apri1 has been designated £or commemoration of the fair <br />housing law; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of May£ield Village, County of <br />Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, that: <br />SECTION 1. The Mayor and Council recognize April, 1989 as Fair Housing <br />Month and supports the constitutional rights of all citizens to live where <br />they choose. <br />SECTION 2. The Mayor and Council affirm their commitment to open housing <br />and equal housing opportunity for all citizens and assure the rights of every <br />citizen to buy, rent, or sell housing without regard to race, sex, color, <br />religion, national origin, handicap, or familial status, guaranteed by Title <br />VIII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1968 as amended, and the laws of the <br />State of Ohio. <br />SECTION 3. Every agency of this government shall lend full support to <br />the prosecution of any acts of intimidation, harassment, or violence designed <br />to prevent the free exercise of the housing rights of any homeseeker or <br />resident in this community.
