A RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATIOfV TO DETEGTIVE SERGEAfdT DONALD J. SMITFi <br />FOR OVER FIFTY YEe4RS OF DEDICA'TION AND SERVICE <br />TO THE MAYFIELD VILLAGE POLICE DEPARTMEPIT <br />AND CONGRATd1LATING FiIM ON F91S RETIREMENT <br />WHEREAS, since 1961, Donala J. Smith "Smitty" has served Mayfield Village effectively and faithfully as a police <br />offcer, Detective and Sergeant; . <br />"EREAS, by way of background, Smitty graduated from the Cuyahoga County Police School, Law - Medicine <br />Center School of Law Enforcement Training and Research at Case Western Reserve University. He then served as a Cuyahoga <br />County Deputy from 1956-1961; <br />WIIEREEIS, after being assigned to the Detective Bureau for Mayfield Village in 1963, Smitty receiued specialized <br />training in all aspects of criminal investigations. His service included follow-up investigations on all felony and some <br />inisdemeanor cases; crime scene investigations; arresting suspects and prisoners; preparing complaints and warrants for Court; <br />and testifying at Court. During his tenure with the Bureau, he received many commendations and words of.praise; <br />WHEREAS,' in .1977, Smitty was promoted to Sergeant and was the Officer-in-Charge of the Detective Bureau, <br />supervising all personnel and activities. He also serveci as investigating supervisor at crime scenes; conducted internal <br />investigations; and was a liaison to all news media organizations, all local and Federal court jurisdictions, all local prosecutor's <br />offices and all law enforcement agencies; <br />WIIEREAS, Smitty had a long, highly successful and decorated career. In his "spare time," Smitty assisted the <br />Chiefs of Police in putting together 'and serving as the coordinator for the Suburban Police Anti-Crime Network (SPAN), which <br />includes several surrounding communities. Smitty addi.tionally worked on the Suburban Aut6 Theft Strike Force, the-Ohio <br />Organized Crime Auto Theft Task Force, and the Cuyahoga County Crime Stoppers Investigator's Task Force. He also served <br />as the Department's Crisis Intervention Negotiator; <br />WHEREAS, Smitty was also associated with the Fraternal Order of Police, Eastern Cuyahoga County Lodge #57, <br />serving five terms as a three-year trustee; he was a trustee for Cleveland Crime Clinic for 10 years; past President of the <br />Cleveland Metropolitan Crime Bureau; past President of the Ohio Identification Officers Association; life member of the <br />International Association for ldentification; and life member of the Ohio Auto Theft Investigator's Association; and <br />WI3EREAS, Smitty's service to the residents of Mayfield Village and surrounding communities is hereby <br />acknowledged and appreciated. He will be missed by his fellow employees, other police officers in the area, MayF'ield Village <br />residents and business owners. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY TgIE COYJNCIL OF MAYFIELD VILLAGE, OHIO, THAT: <br />Detective Sergeant Donald J. Smith be and is hereby recognized and apprecnated <br />for his over fifty (50) years of dedicated and exceptional service to Mayfield Village. <br />SECTI0101 1. The VilYage of Mayfield, its Mayor, Council; residents, employers, employees and officials wish to <br />uiank Detective Sergeant Donald J. Smith for his many years of dedicated service and congratulate him on his retirement. <br />SECTIOIV 2. The Cour.cil finds and determines that all formal actions of the Council relating to the adoption of this <br />?:esolution have been taken at open meetings of this Council; and tha± deliberations of this Council and of its committees, <br />esulting in such formal action, took place in meetings open to the public in compliance with all statutory requirements <br />including the requirements of Secrion 121.22 of the Ohio Revised Code. <br />SECTION 3. The Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to prepare duplicate original copies of this <br />Resolution. One such original shall be presented to Detective Sergeant Donald J. Smith. The other original shall be placed in <br />the permanent records of the Village as a lasting iribute to Letactive Se:beant Donald J. Smith. <br />SECTIOlti 4. This resolution shall become effective upon its adoption by Council and the signature of the Mayor, or as <br />may otherwise be provided by law.
