RESOLUTION 2009-08 <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Bruce G. Rinker and Council as a Whole <br />a4 RESOLUTION DECLARINC AUGIJST, 2009 <br />IVIAYFIELD VILLAGE FIREFIGHTER APPRECIATION MONTH <br />WHEREAS, the Mayor of Mayfield Village, Ohio has the responsibility to <br />honor outstanding achievements; and <br />WHEREAS, this year marks the SSth year that firefighters throughout the <br />country and Ohio have joined the Muscular Dystrophy Association in the fight <br />against neuromuscular disease. Ohio firefighters collected $665,000.00 for Jerry's <br />Kids and are ranked S"' in the country; and <br />WHEREAS, Muscular Dystrophy refers to a group of more than 40 <br />neuromuscular diseases that cause generalized weakness and muscle wasting. Two <br />of the more common neuromuscular diseases include Duchenne muscular <br />dystrophy, a disease found in children, and Lou Gehrig's disease, a disorder that <br />progresses rapidly in adults that is also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; and <br />WHEREAS, The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health <br />agency - a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at <br />conquering neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, <br />comprehensive medical and community services, a nationwide services program, a <br />network of clinics, summer camps, and far-reaching professional and public health <br />education. It was created in 1950 by a driven group of parents whose children were <br />living with muscular dystrophy; and <br />WHEREAS, Mayfield Village recognizes MDA's exceptional achievements <br />with research grants, support groups, summer camps and fundraising events, and <br />commends MDA for a j ob well done; and <br />WHEREAS, NIDA is the first non-profit recognized by the American <br />Medical Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award "for significant and <br />lasting contributions to the health and welfare of humanity." <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF <br />MAYFIELD VILLAGE, OHIO, THAT: <br />SECTION 1. The Village of Mayfield, its Mayor, Council, residents, <br />employers, employees and officials wish to thank the Mayfield Village Fire <br />Department for their efforts in raising over $2,500.00 in 2008 to help Mayfield <br />Village families living with MDA.
