RESOLUTION NO. 2007-09 <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Rinker and Council as a Whole <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN <br />CABI.E TELEVISION RATES BY TIME WARNER CABLE AND <br />AND DECLARING AN EMEI2GENCY <br />WHEREAS, after the acquisition of Adelphia Communications Corporation by <br />Time Warner NY Cable LLC, ("Time Warner"), Time Warner has increased the cable <br />television service rates charged to residents of Mayfield Village far in excess of the rate of <br />inflation; and <br />WHEREAS, it appears that Time Warner is attempting to make up for its <br />acquisition costs and also to take advantage of its near monopolistic position of currently <br />being the only non-satellite based cable provider in Mayfield Village; and <br />WHEREAS, this unfortunate price strategy has put a strain on the tight budgets <br />most Mayfield Village residents must endure in these tough economic times; and <br />WHElaEAS, Mayfield Village can only hope that AT&T and other cable providers <br />will enter this market and provide meaningful competition in order to temper this <br />irresponsible pricing currently being undertaken by Time Warner; and <br />WHEgtEAS, Mayfield Village urges Time Warner to rethink its pricing strategy; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Mayfield Village urges the new Congress to revisit cable television <br />regulation with an eye towards mandating responsible pricing to prevent unconscionable <br />rate structures being forced upon Mayfield Village residents. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF MAYFIELD <br />VILLAGE, THAT: <br />SECTION 1. The Mayor and all members of Council hereby object to the recently <br />announced rate hikes by Time Warner which are far in excess of the rate of inflation and <br />reflect a strategy of corporate greed as opposed to corporate responsibility. Further the <br />Mayor and all members of Council hereby urge its Congressional representatives to review <br />this issue with the goal of regulating Time Warner and similar companies who talce <br />advantage of the consumers by monopolistic pricing strategies. <br />SECTION 2. The Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and directed to <br />certify a copy of this resolution to Time Warner NY Cable LLC, Senator Sherrod Brown, <br />Senator George Voinovich, Representative Dennis J. Kucinich, the local news media, and <br />other municipalities located within Cuyahoga County.
