RESOLUTION NO. 2005-11 <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Rinker and Council as a Whole <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE PROPOSED JOB CUTS <br />AT NASA, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY <br />WHEREAS, recently proposed priorities, moving away from aeronautics <br />and concentrating on space exploration, would negatively impact the NASA <br />Glenn R~Search Center due to our historic specialties; and <br />WHE EAS, these proposed priorities, downplaying basic research and <br />development, ill result in our giving away the United States' historical <br />dominance in aerospace; and <br />WHEREAS, a proposed federal budget would strip almost one-fifth of <br />NASA Glenn's income, rom $637 million to $519 million, and will eliminate over <br />700 civil service jobs an ore than 440 contractors; and <br />WHEREAS, many outs nding, highly educated and extremely talented <br />scientists and engineers would I t their jobs and be forced to relocate from our <br />region; and <br />WHEREAS, our academic institute s would be stripped of educational <br />opportunities, grant funding and outlets for it graduating students; and <br />WHEREAS, the adverse impact on cities t ughout Northeast Ohio would <br />negatively affect our residents' quality of life; and <br />WHEREAS, the trickle down effect would adversel~?~npact businesses <br />which interact with NASA locally, regionally and nationally; a <br />WHEREAS, Ohio must continue to demonstrate the vision, ill and <br />leadership to support NASA Glenn Research Center, and urges the ntir <br />of further aeronautics at the Center, whereby targeting the goals for spat` <br />exploration. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF <br />MAYFIELD VILLAGE, OHIO, THAT: <br />SECTION 1. The City of Mayfield Village does hereby urge Ohio's <br />Congressional Delegation to oppose proposed job cuts at NASA Glenn Research <br />Center, and to further take the necessary action to support Representative <br />Dennis Kucinich and the Mayors and Mangers Association's Coalition against job <br />cuts at NASA. <br />
