64
Regular Council Meeting
3/21/94
Page Two
Patsy Mills, on behalf of the Mavfield Townshi? Historical Societ?, expressed thanks to
all of Council, Mayor Rinker, Mr. Brett, Mr. Diemert, for being so generous in their
donation for their continued restoration of their house. (She had left a mug with candy
on the table for each of them.)
Mrs. Cinco said they will handle the SOM/Highland intersection during the "Open
Portion". She said she has been assured that Mrs. Marquardt's video is ttivo minutes.
Mrs. Marquardt verified that the part of the video she wants to show is 2 minutes.
Mr. Bob Ehrhardt, 565 Timberline Trail, said he is the spokesperson representing the
people of Aintree North. They are very concerned about the construction that is going
to be going on in their development on S.O.M. Center and on Miner Road. In looking
over the proposals that you passed out to us, I see that you have an access going
northbound only on S.O.M. which means there will be no access to our development
other than going down Zorn Lane, up Metro, or to Hickory Hill. From a safety
standpoint, I feel that you will be getting into the spring weather, you are going to have
all the traffic coming out of our development going down those streets where there will
be small children playing, with excessive traffic that people are not used to in that area
(we don't even have access out of our development through Wildwood). I feel that
coming up and going southbound on S.O.M. Center we will be plagued with people
driving up, not being able to get through, turning down Hickory Hill, turning down
Metro, driving through our development all the way down Timberline to the end
realizing that they can't get out of there and then turning around and going back the
other way. My feeling and what we would like to hear as residents is what your
reasoning is as to why either Highland Road can't be open westbound or S.O.M. can't be
utilized in both directions with either a traffic guard or with some form of a stop light so
people can get through both ways.
Mayor Rinker said hopefully you have had a chance to review the letter from Dick
Overmyer, who is the Engineer who designed this. It is not as detailed as I would like,
however, my concern was in the past several days as we were approaching tonight's
meeting, I wanted Council first of all to be aware that over the past few weeks we have
investigated this and at least had some input from the person who designed this in the
first place. Mayor Rinker said he will try to summarize where we are. It is, in fact,
safety considerations that are paramount that support the configuration that they have
finally adopted. He said we really wanted to get a crossover from Timberline onto
Highland westbound only for the very reason we knew people would be concerned for
the problem of having to detour, concerns about traffic, to be able to get out of there.
Mayor Rinker said you must try to envision that this is effectively going to be a crater in
the intersection. T'he intersection itself is going to be lowered anywhere from a foot to
