lii
Special Council Meeting , --_
4/10/94
Page Nine
construction project period. Opening up to Highland Road does not make the response
time better. That is not true. So, on balance, when all things are considered, I am
expressing to you my heartfelt feeling is that we are trying to look out for the interests
of everyone. We are truly keeping what we think is a responsible point of view in
looking out for our residents and for anybody who has to deal with this intersection.
CO There are a lot of people who do not live in Mayfield Village who have to travel through
C0 it. We have tried to weigh all factors objectively and fairly. We do not want to
? inconvenience you. As I said in the letter, and I would say it again tonight, we are, we
will continue, I would certainly very easily entertain a recommendation from Council to
z have the authority to expend more dollars if it will make this project go quicker and
? efficiently and safer. But, based upon a very close discussion with a lot of people, I do
not endorse opening up Highland Road. I do not think it is safer; I think it is
dangerous. I am not saying that because I have anything to gain from this, or that I
have some ulterior purpose, or that there is some hidden agenda here. The literature
quite frankly, implies that there is some benefit to be gained by creating a problem.
That is not true at all. We are really trying to do this fairly.
Mr. Marino, said the signs on SOM Center Road are adequate, but after you turn into
Metro Park Drive or Hickory Hill, there are no signs to direct you to Wildwood Trail.
Mrs. Cinco asked Chief Stevens to look into proper signage.
Mayor Rinker addressed Chief Stevens and asked is there is anything that he has
misstated as far as your understanding of what you have to deal with, with the safety
and what you know about these two alternatives. Is there anything I am saying that is
incorrect?
Chief Stevens said no, you have covered it. I am not sure that the people in general
have an understanding of it. First of all, I would say that I am just a police officer; I am
not a traffic engineer. I share the concerns of all the residents for their inconvenience. It
also inconveniences us to get to your homes for service. But the safety issue, when I
was asked for my opinion, if you compromise the one-way traffic pattern which has
been engineered through the system northbound with a westbound traffic pattern as
well, there is a compromise to safety. That is; there is a risk of increased incidence of
accident or injury up there. As far as access goes, some of the calls I received regarding
access of emergency equipment, some of you should be advised that even with a
. westbound traffic pattern coming out of Wildwood and Highland, that our emergency
equipment, not necessarily the police cars--but certainly the ambulances and the fire
trucks, could not make that turn anyway and would still have to divert to Metro Park to
service your vicinity. But, basically what the Mayor has stated is the facts as we know
