308
Regular Council Meeting
12/19/94
Page Sixteen
contradictory. If this is to be discussed, if this is to allow for further discussion, why
then was that not presented tonight?
I don't think that anybody in this Village should have any question about where we are
coming from, certainly about where I have been coming from.. This was a promise that I
made three years ago. I understood Council made it at that time. This was a campaign
promise that I made. I have tried pointedly to keep this as above board and as open-
minded a discussion as possible. I have stated my reasons. I have seen, first-hand
Council representatives who initially adamantly opposed this, who have, through
careful discussion and scrutiny in the spirit of good government, have come back and
indicated their willingness to support what is a sound investment in our community.
For people who are worried about fixed incomes and don't have kids and see this as
strictly an issue for parents with children, we have responded that this is a good
investment in your community. The evidence is legion that a good school system is one
of the best attributes a community can have to promote solid housing values, property
values, across the board.
That is just a very fundamental building block. It goes beyond that point.
For people who have kids in the school system, they will be able to see a direct
investment for their children over the life of fifteen years. For all of us, this is one of the
best ways we can control the manner in which our tax dollars are spent, because we
earmark, we have appropriated this for a specific purpose; we will require axi.d we will
get annually reports on this; we can see direct evidence of how well it is being invested
and can control it.
And for those out there who want to see their tax dollars spent well, this, to me, is a
somewhat novel but a very responsible way to deal. All of these thuzgs have been
discussed and more; and yet tonight, with barely a whisper, this was just dropped.
And I, frankly, don't think that this is in the spirit of promoting further discussion. And .
whatever response you make now, I think it's too little too late. I am very sorry.
ADjOURNMENT
Mr. Ferrante, seconded by Mr. Flynn, made a motion to adjourn.
ROLL CALL: AYES: All
NAYS: None Motion Carried
