She said the next fund raising event is the Village Garage
Sale requesting all to start f inding items to donate. Donations will be
received on Wednesday from 4 to 6 P.M. and on Saturdays from 10:00 until
noon, starting March 3rd.
Firemens Dependents Fund.- Mr. Flynn stated there was no need for a Firemens
Dependents Fund Meeting this month.
Hillcrest Council of'Couricils - Council President Spellma.n stated he and Mr.
Busa attended the last meeting.
Mr. Busa stated there will be an important meeting February 24 to discuss
group purchasing which he believed Lhe Police and Fire Chiefs would be
invited to attend. He urged all Couricil members to attend this meeting to
be held at Lyndhurst City Hall.
Council President Spellman announced the arrival of Congressman Dennis Eckart
at this time (8:35 p.m.) and asked if he had any comments.
Congressman Eckart said he would be happy to answer any questions from Council
or members of the audience.
Council asked Mr. Eckart to briefly describe his situation regarding redistricting.
Congressman Eckart stated that due to the latest census resultS Congress is
reapporting districts and Ohio will be losing two members of Congress, several
other states are losing members also. He said that as a result of the
population shifts that have taken place around the country in the last ten
years the net result is a shift of 17 seats from the North to the South.
This involves the State Legislature so he does not know exactly how his position
will be affected. He said adjustments will be made in his district, approximately
seven different proposals have been planned, all of which affect his district.
He stated the east side has been one Congressional District since 1936. Some
proposed changes would be moving out to Lake County, moving around the bottom of
Cuyahoga County over to Parma, Westlake and Bay Village. The plan will be
completed sometime in early March. He stated he has been lobbying hard to keep
the east side communities of interest together. He stated that several states
have gone to Federal Court on the provision of the law that dictates if the
State Legislatures are incapable of reassigning the districts the Federal
Court will intervene. Congressma.n Eckart stated he believes in the history
and tradition of the 22nd District and expressed his vote is cast in the best
interest of the 22nd District. He said one of his reasons for his opposition
to a number of plans is because they are unfair to our region.
