Regular Council Meeting 5/18/92
Page Eleven
Written, informal bids must be submitted to Council for approval.
Hickory Hill Pumping Station - Mr. Woloszynek stated they received a fax today from the County
stating the Attorney General's office is requiring the elimination of the Hickory Hill Waste Water
Treatment Plant. The Village Engineer recommends that a meeting be held at the County Sanitary
Engineer's office to discuss the details.
Mr. Rinker asked for a report when available.
New Ambulance - Mr. Fixler questioned if the irade-in was purchased on a 50150 basis also.
Chief Mohr stated that it was.
Mr. Rinker stated they are currently considering putting on a full-time D.A.R.E. officer. No action
will be taken this evening but Sgt. Griesmar is here to report on the program.
Sgt. Mac Griesmaz stated most everyone is familiar with the drug education program which has
been active since January 1990. There are 500 students in the fifth and sixth grade programs.
. They expanded the program this yeaz to the Mayf'ield Middle School with 250 students graduaring
from the program. With that in mind, he is here to answer some. questions with regazd to the
program becoming full-time. Mayor Pietrafese has proposed that by assigning a full-time
D.A.R.E. officer, other communiries would be encouraged to participate. If so, they would shaze
in the costs of the program. This would eliminate or reduce the need for overtime which he is
currently handling with the school. This would be available district wide for the first time. The
present time sheets will not reflect the hours.devoted to the program or the time needed to expand.
He has been given four hours for program management, but his time goes well beyond four hours.
Yes, there would be enough work to make it a full-time posirion. During the Summer months,
Sgt. Crriesmar, first, would be talcing a vacation. The remainder of that time is a matter that can be
addressed by the Chief, who he is sure, could find something for him to do in the department.
Mr. Basile questioned if Highland Heights was getting involved.
Sgt. Griesmar said one of the reasons for considering a full-time D.A.R.E. officer is getting all the
district communities involved. He feels if a full-time person is available and the program is offered
district wide, there will be corporarions who will want to sponsor the program. This could mean
the Village would eventually have no cost. If a full-time officer, Sgt. Crriesmar's free time would
be spent to solicit those not in the program. He has already lined up one sponsor for a contribution
of $500.00 to the Mayfield Middle School for the Fall. Highland Heights, Gates Mills and
Mayfield Heights have already indicated they aze interested.
Mr. Basile quesrioned if they will also be paying an officer.
Sgt. Griesmar was not aware if they were.
Mayor Pietrafese commented on his experience when his son was in the program. He was amazed
at the control and respect Sgt. Griesmaz had with the kids.
