Regular Council Meeting
3-17-97
Page 2
important issues? I don't recall that they had anything to say when the formex mayor came under
fire for criminal activity. `I'hey just stayed out of it, which is the right thing for thern to da. I
suggest you fallow the lead today of lVlayor Hogg of Highland Heights and stay out of this. A 1ot
can happen-between novv and November. If you pass fhis resoiution what you've clone is already
taken sides in an election that is 8 months away. If you pass this resolution, I think it'd be like
throwing gasoline on a fire. I say iet the fire burn itself out. I say stay out of this. We electect the
school board to do their job. I say Iet them do it. This caming November the people will decide
if they approve of whatever action the school board takes in the meantime. Until then, I suggest
you put this resolution away and get on with Village business. Mr. RiddIe said he iinagines Mr.
Marquardt will, in all }ikelihood, abstain because of his obvious can#liict of interest with his wife
being a member ofthe school board. In any case, remember that I3ave Abbott quit us-we dicin't
quit him, He was not fired; he was the ane that put us into this position. So, I say it's time for us
to do a little quitting tao. Let's quit #hinking about politics and November's eleetion and let the
school board do what they believe to be best for our kids. I say for tlie rest of this year to let the
school board do their job. We may all be surprised at just how well we do it. Remember this-
the same people that voted in that school board voted you in too. The people decided that
election as they decided your- election. Al Kay (the Mayfield Heights Council Presndent) was
quoted in the News Herald as saying, "Mayfield Heights Council should not meddle in school
board business." Frankly, maybe Mayfield Village Council shouldn't meddle in school board
business either. Our school-board, in a time like this, needs our support. They don't need our
second guessing. Come November the voters can make whatever corrections they feel are
appropriate. For now, Iet the Board da their job and vote no on this resolution.
I'atricia Wele 6806 Wilson Mtlls Road 1Vlavfield Villaae, said she does not have a prepared
speech and is unfamiliar with the procedure--so please inform her as she goes along.
Mrs. Cinca said there is a 5 minute lunit.
Mrs. Wele said she is new to the area and is just becoming accustomed to some o£ the business
takirig place in the schaQl board. Having eome out of a schaol district uvhich was at the time very
peaceful and being familiar with the procedures, she is very surprised and dismayed with what she
is encountering heie. She is concerned with the intimidating attitude and what she perceives to be
overbearing attitudes which she feels are manifeAing themselves in the board meetings. She has
never seen that before. Nlaybe she is nmt as accustomed ta politics as she should be, but it is
certainiy not cahning as a parent to see this type of tension in the school board taking place. She
has great niisgivings about what kind of decisions are being made. She was pleased ta hear from
Mayor Rinker when she went to the CSA and board rrieetings the other day because she heard in
his voice a voice of reason and a voice of calm. He was presenting, m her opinion, a very
reasonable solutionto apotentially dangerous problem. There is a great deal of anger-she has
spoken with many people because she is concerned about her children. She said she is fairly well
informed as to what people are thinkuig. The opinions she has gotten, probably 20 to one, is that
people are angry with the decision to force Dr. Abbott's resignation. They are angry, #hey are
upset and they want to be heard. They want more opportunity ta express themselves. She is
