Regular Council Meeting
4-21-08
Page 22
Mr. Marrotte stated that he thinks the people here are creating a bad impression amongst
the Village people by not responding. They think you-are ignoring them. Mr. Saponaro stated
that he is not sure what we are not responding to. Mr. Marrotte replied that you are not
responding to the fact that the people are being solicited and they are confused about what the
solicitation is all about. You at least ought to tell them that the people have a right to solicit, that
the state controls where the well can go, or where it cannot go. Mr. Saponaro replied that that is
what these guys are trying to put together.
Council President Buckholtz stated that we are preparing a letter to go out. We were
trying to make a more comprehensive package because different scenarios keep coming forward.
Mr. Marrotte stated that people were solicited three weeks ago and have not heard
anything. They feel that you are ignoring them. Mrs. Cinco indicated that they need guidelines.
Council President Buckholtz stated that he does not think anyone here disagrees with Mr.
Marrotte. Council President Buckholtz does not think that anyone has. He does not think we are
dragging our feet. Mr. Marrotte stated that he is telling everyone what the people in the
neighborhood think.
Council President Buckholtz stated that every time we read the Sun Press, there is either
one or two gas wells that something has gone awry with and there has been a clamp down in
both that community as well as surrounding communities halting any further business. Before
the Council meeting, Mr. Marquardt and Council President Buckholtz were talking about it and
he did raise a good point, saying that the law has not changed yet. These people axe free range
out there. Mrs. Mills has been working on this too. We have all said the same thing. Doug was
standing up here 10 minutes before the meeting started and he said let's get this all going out.
This is the top of the news item in the Hillcrest area. Every week there is another story about a
coalition, a community or a group of people trying to get this law changed in Columbus and
curtail the gas or be more restrictive. Mrs. Mills brought up a fire prevention. Are the fire
departments equipped to handle gas specific emergencies as well as they could be? All of this is
going on in the meantime. We are not ignoring it, but the general consensus factor was that it
was different when people were walking up and down the street dishing out cash and everyone is
running like the gold rush of the west. There was a big damper on that. This indicates that we
need to pull this together now and that is what we are doing.
Mrs. Mills stated that some of the problem is that whoever is doing the solicitation is
indicating the locations of the wells. We have counted up 8 wells in the SenecalBonnieview
area. Mrs. Mills does not know how that could be possible. Mr. Saponaro replied that can't be.
Mrs. Mills knows, but that is where the stories get. We can't let this go on. As indicated in
Caucus, we have to do something.
Council President Buckholtz stated we are all in agreement. Garry Regan, who knows
the business was telling him, there is not nearly the gas around here that people think. One gas
company that he knew of informally said, we are pulling our bid out. We don't even want to do
