Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
May 22, 2006
Page 10
Motion to authorize acceptance of the proposal of Ohio CAT in the amount of
$62,415.00 for the purchase of a Caterpillar Model 416E Loader Backhoe for the
Service Department
Mr. Saponaro, seconded by Dr. Parker, made a motion to authorize acceptance of the proposal of
Ohio CAT in the amount of $62,415.00 for the purchase of a Caterpillar Model 416E Loader
Backhoe for the Service Department
Mr. Metzung reported that three units were demo'd, a Caterpillar, a CASE and a John Deere. The
CAT was the favorite due to the features, room in the cab and ease of use. The CASE was the
cheapest, the John Deere the most expensive. Purchasing is done on an STS contract which
means the State has reviewed the prices for these pieces of equipment and they are given a
discount on them. The State then accepts that you can purchase any one of these pieces of
equipment, not having to go strictly with the low bid. You will bid against that machine itself.
The CAT was the favorite and showed the best back up as far as maintenance and serviceability
of the machine was concerned. We have had a backhoe for 10 years, but it was a small backhoe
that did not stand up to what we were attempting to do anymore. We destroyed the machine and
needed to get into a larger commercial grade backhoe to do the work that we do such as moving
streets and digging swales. The small backhoe was no longer effective. We need to upgrade to a
commercial one. This machine will allow us to engage in doing our own sidewalks. We are
looking at that very closely. Diesel, four wheel drive. The cost went over the previous 60
amount because we went ahead and purchased a front bucket that has jaws on it on our larger
bucket. That was about a 5,000 almost 6,000 addition, but it allows us to pick up brush and
shrubs and scoop up stone. We have it on our large loader that is used all the time. If something
comes up, it is handy to have. '
Mrs. Cinco asked Mr. Metzung if he anticipates being able to do more of the drainage and
infrastructure projects. Mr. Metzung indicated that we won't be doing as much of that private
property work. It will allow them to do a lot more. They will be purchasing a bucket which will
allow them to get in between ditches. That will be useful. This machine should last 20-30 yeaxs.
Roll Call: AYES: All
NAYS: None
Motion Carried
Expenditure Authorized
Motion to approve expansion of non-conforming use requested by Dr. Jeffrey Eadie
(865 SOM Center Road).
Mr. Saponaro, seconded by Mr. Marquardt, made a motion to approve expansion of non-
conforming use requested by Dr. Jeffrey Eadie (865 SOM Center Road).
