Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
August 28, 2006
Page 6
The next steps are to receive confirmation from Mayfield Village that the program and
intent of design as defined in this report and presentation is accepted. They would like to
continue on the project and see it all the way through. The next phase is fine tuning the program
and the floor plans, design development where they work through the details of the space and
finally producing contract documents that will then be used for negotiation. This is something
that a lot of people would like to see happen as soon as possible and they can work with
Mayfield Village to expedite this project to the greatest extent that they can but they would need
to have authorization to proceed.
The floor was then opened for discussion.
Mr. Saponaro explained to everyone that a meeting took place on July 20~. As a result of
their discussions, Angela and Ray went back and retooled some of the thoughts that they had and
fine tuned some things. We will all have to digest this feasibility report before making any
decisions. Certainly while we have them here if anyone has any questions or concerns, feel free
to take advantage and ask.
Tom Fulton, Executive Director of Fairmount Center introduced himself and guests with
him, Fred Sternfeld, Director of Theater, Scott Lax, Director of Writing and Associate Director
of Strategic Planning for Fairmount Center and Shirley Kolenic, Administrative Director. They
looked at the plans extensively when they were at the meeting on the 20~'. Tom emphasized that
as they are major stakeholders in this process, this design is important to them.. They had a tough
challenge to turn a sanctuary into a theater. They have done a remarkable job satisfying all of the
needs of a fully professional theater and in utilizing the workrooms downstairs to make it work
for them and Mayfield Village.
A new brochure with Fairmount Center information and fall classes will be coming out
shortly which includes a very robust theater program which Fred directs, a robust creative
writing program that Scott directs and some very interesting music programs. Dance has not
been added because the floors are not ready. They have a Fairmount Youth Pops Orchestra
coming in, a youth theater from toddlers to professionals and writing classes for adults and for
teens. Their expectations about this space have risen also over the last two years during
negotiations using the space. What these guys have done is put the cap on it and said okay.
Fairmount looked at and said, yes, we can now seriously think about making this a professional
space. Tom asked Fred and Scott to say something quickly about what they are doing and what
their plans are so you can see what they are planning to do in relation to this space.
Fred indicated that he envisions bringing in all kinds of performing arts events into this
space, a professional theater and a teen and youth theater. With a professional theater, they can
create events that will rival any other region and make Mayfield Village a mecca for audiences
and performers from all over to create a whole new venue. For teen and youth as well, they will
be dropped off from all over the region. They have already begun. They have a summer camp
which had 155 kids this last summer. They were located in Chagrin Falls. There is some talk
about possibly in the future doing something with land in the Metroparks that Mayfield Village
