Minutes of the Combined Caucus/Council Meeting
6-11-07
Page 18
Motion to authorize an expenditure in an amount not to exceed $100,000.00 for the
annual allocation to Mayfield Schools.
Mr. Saponaro, seconded by Mrs. Mills, made a motiori to authorize an expenditure in an amount
not to exceed $100,000.00 for the annual allocation to Mayfield Schools.
Council President Buckholtz asked if there was any discussion. This was brought up in Finance.
They typically give us a breakdown of how they spent the money. Originally, we dedicated it for
technology, although it is not written that way in the original Ordinance. This year they came to
us and asked if they could use it in part for the fieldhouse. Council President Buckholtz met with
Dr. Price who advised him that primarily that was to cover a lot of cost connected with the adult
education programs that are held in there which we are a major user o£ Where we never really
designated a use before, we are really not designating one now other than originally we discussed
technology. They are set with technology. It would be frivolous to spend more on technology.
Mayor Rinker reminded everyone that this grew out of controversy of many years ago. The idea
was that we would be able to share some income taxes which typically we would not do with the
schools. We felt this was a fair trade-off relative to the abatement on the Wilson Mills site. The
original legislation always looked to our achieving certain numbers in order to justify that. Were
they ever to fall below that, the number would correspondingly go down. If has never gone
down. It has never been an issue. That is a real good testament to how over the years we have
been able to coordinate a number of these things with the school district. We earmark these
funds for Mayfield Village facilities. The idea is that the residents need to know that the funds
that are being taken out of our general fund go to specific uses. The school has always been very
diligent in the application of that. We chose originally science and technology because it seemed
to be a good common denominator, a good area at the time, especially as the school was
projecting a lot of investment and in fact added a whole new science wing during those interim
years. Programs at the fieldhouse are all community-oriented programs which Bill Thomas
could tell you chapter and verse the extent of which our camp programs and our adult ed
programs, are so integrated with the school district. The bottom line is we can rest assured that
these dollars are being put to uses that ultimately benefit Mayfield residents.
Roll Call: AYES: All Motion Carried
NAYS: None Expenditure Authorized
Motion to authorize an expenditure in an amount not to exceed $300,000.00 for
auditorium renovationsa
Mrs. Mills, seconded by Mr. Saponaro, made a motion to authorize an expenditure in an amount
not to exceed $300,000.00 for auditorium renovations.
Council President Buckholtz asked if there was any discussion. Council President Buckholtz
asked if everyone had a chance to read through the information provided. We discussed this at
great length in Finance. It is the recommendation of the Finance Committee to go forward with
