Minutes of the Council Meeting
December 17, 2007
Page 12
little bit on our own a few years ago when we partnered up with Beta Technologies where we
agreed to provide infrastructure improvement, a spot on our monopole and also some seed
money that would allow this landlord of property that had been pretty stagnant over a number of
years to be able to offer to tenants a superior high speed broadband internet access for a fractioil
of the cost that other businesses are paying for. We have been provided a lot of information
anecdotally, but not only have a number of businesses come to Mayfield Village and grown,
however modestly from 3-12, from a handful of people they have grown nonetheless. We have
already seen a return on that investment. We have heard anecdotally of another company moving
into a 200,000 vacated building. 200,000 square feet of space is a lot of space for any location. It
was on the market for a year and a half. Ultimately, we are learning that a company is ready to
relocate. One of the key attractive components is the fact that Mayfield Village has been
investing in its technology infrastructure, that it has a relationship with the School District, that it
has a relationship with local business. The Mayfield Community Schools Business Alliance
grew out of problems that we faced many years ago when we were looking at ways to preserve
our tax base. When you pit your community against your school for those tax dollars, it always
makes for more friction than not.
Tonight, we have had an opportunity to celebrate the fact that this community and this school
district can work well together and we know that there are a number of businesses in the area that
are trying to do it. We are trying to look across political boundaries and recognize economic
ones. There is always a rislc when we venture into a new area, but we have shown that we are
usually pretty prudent with our investments. The County is looking for minimums to malce sure
that the risk is a lower risk that not. Mayor Rinker thinks it is safe to say that we will continue
not only through Phil Brett and Ted Esborn who has come on board with guns blazing, but each
of us, in one way or another, have shown that when we are willing to roll up our sleeves and
work on these things, we can accomplish much. We don't always have the ability to predict, but
Mayor Rinker knows that this Council and with discussion that has come out of this, when the
questions are asked and we have to answer, it is important that we do our homework. There is
never a substitute for getting at that information. Mayor Rinker would like to think that what we
are doing is somewhat unique and it will be very successful. Mayor Rinker is confident that we
will follow through. Mayor Rinker appreciates the vote.
NEW BUSINESS .
Motion to authorize expenditure to the Cuyahoga County Regional Information
System in the amount of $15,260.00 for monthly service fees ($1,000.00) and
monthly LEAI)S access eharge per month ($250.00) for the period 1/1/08 through
12/31/08.
Mrs. Mills, seconded by Dr. Parker, made a motion to authorize expenditure to the Cuyahoga
County Regional Information System in the amount of $15,260.00 for monthly service fees
($1,000.00) and monthly LEADS access charge per month ($250.00) for the period 1/1/08
through 12/31/08.
