The
driver heading eastbound on Wilson Mills didn't stop fast enough to avoid the collision. Thankfully, my wife didn't
suffer serious injuries, only neck and bads pain along with a hefty car repair bill. I'm also thankful that my 14
month old daughter wasn't in the car during that accident. A Mayfield Village police office witnessed the accident
and remarked to my wife that he just told his partner, prior to seeing the accident, that this is an intersection to
watch because if drivers aren't careful there will be an accident While we've only lived on Chase Drive for one
year, both of us have experienced several dose calls with drivers heading eastbound and westbound on Wilson
Mills running through red lights. We think many of these drivers just don't see the light as apposed to being the
typical red light runners.
After sharing our story with several neighbors, they immediately agreed that the intersection isn't safe and they
have also had close calls. I called Police Lieutenant Dearden to discuss possibilities for improving the
intersection. Lt. Dearden talked with the Traffic Department and reported back that modfications were made to
the light timings and that he will file for grant money to study the intersection. To help support this effort, he
suggested that I work through the Aintree Homeowners Association to survey residents on their thoughts about
the intersection. I contacted Jce Prcela, the Association I~resident. With Joe's help, I developed a survey and
vue gathered input from a sample of Aintree residents. Joe and I talked with 34 households and here are the
survey results: ~- ~,
• 2 out of 34 households had someone in the household involved in an accident at the intersection
• 33 out of 34 households have had "dose calls" at the intersection
• the number of "dose calls" per households range from 1 to 350
• 32 out of 34 households believe that the intersection is more dangerous than typical intersections
• 34 out of 34 households support a traffic study to look for safer alternatives
One important comment that came from every household was that they have learned to proceed slowly into the
intersection once the light turns green. They know that Wilson Mills traffic from both sides of the street often run
the red lights. Almost everyone has had dose calls.
I know the intersection's design, with Raleigh and Beta being offset, is at the core of the problem. My intent isn't
to change this but rather I ask that Mayfield Vllage look into alternative light designs, signage, traffic rules and
light sequencing to help reduce red light runners. There could be low cost solutions that would have a significant
impact on making the intersection safer.
Respectfully Submitted,
~~
Paul Mlynek
