June 17, 2020
Ms. Sheela Johnson
Natural Resource Specialist
US Forest Service
Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry
11 Campus Boulevard, Suite 200
Newtown Square, PA 19073
Re: Letter of Support for FY2020 U.S. Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative application by
Chagrin River Watershed Partners, Inc. on behalf of the Central Lake Erie Basin Collaborative,
Planting Trees to Reduce Runoff in Ohio's Central Lake Erie Basin
Dear Ms. Johnson,
On behalf of Mayfield Village, I am pleased to submit this letter of support for Chagrin River Watershed
Partners' (CRWP) application to the FY 2020 U.S. Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative program on
behalf of the Central Lake Erie Basin Collaborative. This application proposes to reduce runoff through
targeted plantings in central Lake Erie basin watersheds, which includes the reforestation of 3.25 acres of
riparian habitat at Village -owned property near Bonnieview Road and Beech Hill Road.
This project will reduce polluted stormwater runoff and improve water quality in the Griswold Creek -Chagrin
River subwatershed of the Chagrin River watershed, which is impaired from excessive stormwater runoff
from urban and suburban development. The Chagrin River watershed and Lake Erie will benefit from this
opportunity to expand tree cover, reduce sediment and stormwater runoff, and improve water quality. It will
directly contribute to achievement of water quality goals listed in the State -endorsed Griswold Creek -Chagrin
River Non -Point Source Implementation Strategy and implements actions outlined in the Great Lakes
Restoration Initiative Action Plan II to restore and manage healthy native plant populations and reduce
nonpoint source pollution to the Great Lakes and its tributaries.
Mayfield Village supports this project and commits to working with CRWP to coordinate the plantings. At its
June 15, 2020 meeting, Mayfield Village Council approved $14,722 of cash match (20 percent of total budget
for this site) to support this project on Village -owned property. Additionally, the Village will agree to maintain
the trees and shrubs including watering, mulching, pruning and other activities in accordance with the
project's approved maintenance plan. Mayfield Village will also allow a sign to be installed at the project site.
We strongly encourage your favorable consideration of Chagrin River Watershed Partners' application on
behalf of the Central Lake Erie Basin Collaborative under the U.S. Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration
Initiative Program. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Very truly yours,
Brenda T. Bodnar, Mayor
