Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, April 15, 2024
Page 2
Special Council Meeting — April 1, 2024
Mrs. Jurcisek, seconded by Mr. Arndt, made a motion to approve the minutes of the Special
Council Meeting of April 1, 2024 as written.
Council President Schutt asked, any discussion?
There was none.
ROLL CALL: AYES: All Motion Carries
NAYS: None Minutes of April 1, 2024
Meeting Approved as Written
Comments From Mayor Bodnar
Thank you Council President. I see we have an unusually large group before us this evening. We
have some residents with us. We have some representatives from Mayfield Schools. We have a
lot of first responders here tonight. We have our new Finance Director, Angie Rich. And we also
have with us Mr. Tony Hocevar. Tony is here tonight. If you have a chance to introduce yourself,
Tony is running as a candidate for State Representative for House District 12. Thank you for
coming tonight also. You are in for a real treat.
- Commendations for Exceptional Service
Tonight I am pleased and honored to be able to recognize Officer Matt Hocevar as well as
Mayfield City School District employee Paulette Grey for their heroic acts which helped to save a
life. I will read you a Proclamation. It is the same for both.
On Thursday, March 14, 2024, at approximately 10:45 am, Mayfield High School
cafeteria attendant Paulette Grey noticed a student choking while seated in the
cafeteria. She approached the student and attempted to administer the Heimlich
maneuver. When she was unsuccessful in clearing the student's airway, Mrs. Grey
immediately summoned Patrol Officer Matt Hocevar, the School Resource Officer.
Without hesitation, Officer Hocevar ran over to the student, assessed the situation,
and immediately began to again administer the Heimlich maneuver. The boy's
airway was successfully cleared, allowing him to breathe again. Officer Hocevar
sat down and talked to the student to ensure he was okay, waiting until clinic staff
arrived to attend to the student further. Both Mrs. Grey and Officer Hocevar
remained calm, cool, and collected throughout the incident. The entire interaction
lasted only a few minutes, but due to the swift and direct actions of Mrs. Grey and
Officer Hocevar, the student returned to class later that day, and a tragedy was
avoided.
