Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, July 15, 2024
Page 7
was going to rest my head in a few days, my husband wouldn't be the only one who died, because
I wouldn't have survived that. For those of you who have never suffered that type of grief and
worry that consumes you, I hope you never do. But I ask you to have enough empathy to consider
it. Mayfield Village isn't poor. We are not in the red. We are not devastated wondering how we
are going to function tomorrow. There's really no need to do this. More importantly, there's no
need to serve somebody coldly, off the record, when not every Council member knew what was
going to happen last week.
The reality is, I was very blessed to be surrounded by incredible people during both those losses.
Many of those people sit right here tonight. From the outside people would say, oh, look, your
neighbors came. No, neighbors water your plants, feed your cat and check your mail when you
are on vacation. These people held me when I decided to turn off my husband's life support. They
made sure I stayed safe and my son had a meal. They still do. Because Eastgate Drive,
Meadowood Drive, Thornapple and the stretch of Wilson Mills, this isn't a neighborhood. It isn't
Mayfield Village. It isn't a community. It's a family. Family takes care of people. So I hope the
words you heard from Alice and Caitlyn and myself tonight give you a different perspective. Not
just in this situation, but personally, and the situations that will come before this Council in the
future. I hope we can get some answers to those questions today. Thank you.
Council President Schutt asked, are there any other comments this evening?
There were none.
Department Head Reports:
Shane McAvinew (Parks and Recreation) — Thank you Council President. I only have two small
items. This Wednesday, the Mayfield Village Senior Cookout will be at the Parkview Pavilion at
11:00. There's still a need for some chefs if anyone would like to stop down. On August 10`h, we
are going to be needing some more chefs at the Village party at 11:30 at Parkview, so if anyone
would like to help, either e-mail me or stop down to help cook. It would be much appreciated.
That's it.
Council President Schutt stated, thank you, Mr. McAvinew.
Tom Cappello (Engineer) — Yes, Council President. I just wanted to inform you that Ridgebury
Boulevard resurfacing is basically done. If the weather is bad on Wednesday, they will complete
the project on Thursday.
Mr. Murphy asked, it's ahead of schedule?
Mr. Cappello replied, yes. By almost three weeks.
Council President Schutt stated, thank you, Mr. Cappello. Are there any other department head
reports this evening?
