L RESOLUTION NO. 78-20 <br />BY: Council as a Whole <br />A RESOLUTTON EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO THE <br />CONSIDERATION OF NORTHEAST OHIO AS STORAGE <br />FACILTTIES FOR RADIOACTIVE NUCLEAR WASTES <br />DUE TO EXTREME POTENTTAL ENVIRONMENTAI, AND <br />ECOLOGICAL HAZARDS. <br />WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of this Council <br />through the Mayfield Village Advisory Board of Environmental Control <br />that Governor James A. Rhodes and members of his administration <br />are engaged with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in studies to <br />consider Northeast Ohio, Lake Erie, abandoned coal mines, or other <br />geological formations in Ohio as storage facilities for radioactive <br />nuclear wastes, and <br />WHEREAS, the uncertainty of the exact properties of <br />nuclear wastes and its long-term impact upon the environment and <br />the ecology indicate the gravest possible detrimental effects <br />upon human life, as well as the environment, are possible, and <br />WHEREAS, there is minimal experience with the disposal <br />of nuclear wastes in the Uni:ted States although experience indi- <br />cates that atomic waste storage has been banned in the State of <br />Minnesota, prohibited from storage in Louisiana salt domes, placed <br />under legislative control in the State of Vermont and are subject <br />to a one-year moratorium on storage in New Mexico, and <br />WHEREAS, such experience indicates that it would be <br />extremely dangerous and fool-hearty to store nuclear wastes in <br />the Nor•theast reqion of Ohio which constitutes the most heavily <br />populated area of the State as well as one of the more highly <br />populated sections of the United States, and <br />WHEREAS, State Senator John Timothy McCormack has intro- <br />duced a Resolution in the 112th General Assembly of Ohio calling <br />upon Governor Rhodes and members of his administration to immediately <br />cease all consideration of storage facilities for radioactive nuclear <br />wastes in Oh3o, and <br />WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council of the Village of Mayfield <br />Vi:llage desire to support such Resolution and, further, des3re <br />to achieve the result of prohibiting nuclear waste storage in Ohio, <br />now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF MAXFIELD VILLAGE, OHIO, <br />THAT: <br />Section 1. The Mayor and Council of the Village.of.May- <br />field Village, hereby register their support of Senate Joint Resolu- <br />tion No. 32 introduced by Mr. McCormack in the 112th General Assembly <br />and further call upon Governor James A. Rhodes, the Ohio Department <br />of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to cease all studies <br />of Ohio locations for nuclear waste storage and to cease all negotia- <br />tions which would lead to the establishment of nuclear waste storage
